Dark atmospheric black metal is the MO of the debut album from Usynlig Tumult. Ukraine has been a strong
breeding ground in recent years for extreme metal acts, churning out great bands such as Evroklidon, Angel 7, and
the Eastern European folk metal masters Holy Blood. Bursting onto the scene with a vengeance, Usynlig Tumult
plays cold Scandinavian-influenced atmospheric black metal. Embracing the heritage of black metal’s birthplace,
the band’s name is Norwegian, roughly “Invisible Turmoil” in English, and the songs project this theme with their
dark atmosphere and ambience contrasting with the shrill vocals and brutal guitars and drumming. The band
transcends typical black metal boundaries, infusing folk and even some progressive tendencies into their songs. The
members of Usynlig Tumult also play in Ukraine’s melodic death metal act Coram Deo, who just recently released
their full length debut. Usynlig Tumult is recommended for fans of Antestor, Emperor, Naglfar, and all selfrespecting
fans of dark black metal. Embrace the atmosphere and prepare to be musically slain.

OUTBURN MAGAZINE REVIEW
USYNLIG TUMULT
Voices of the Winds
(BOMBWORKS)
7
TO HELL WITH THE DEVIL: Eschewing Ukrainian
black metal’s ever common National Socialist
rhetoric, the duo known as Usynlig Tumult
takes things one step further to buck the modus
operandi as a blasphemous/heathen/Satanic
art form with their surprising Christian themes.
Of course, one would be hard pressed to notice
this given the band’s panda appearance, burly
metal attire, and Norwegian moniker, even
though the “T’s” in “Tumult” are displayed
un-inverted upon the cover art for Voices of the
Winds. Luckily for Usynlig Tumult, the music
contained within these six tracks surpasses
many of their Christian metal counterparts. The
whirring guitars, shrieking vocals, and strong
bass all possess a certain charm, reminiscent
of the genre’s very early years. Had not Voices
of the Winds possessed the honest atmosphere
it does, Usynlig Tumult would be spending their
free time at the bottom of the cutout bin. Still,
the notion of Christian black metal is a difficult
one. With so few options available for the band
to either win over their God fearing compatriots,
or convince the devil loving hordes, it seems
that Usynlig Tumult is stuck between a rock
and a hard place. While Voices of the Windsis
decent, it needs to be more than that in order
to beat the odds stacked against its crossover
potential. ~ George Pacheco
