Album Notes

"What Breaks, What Was Made, And What Is Taken" tells a story and speaks of elements everyone can identify with: life, love, and loss; exhausting, crippling pain, and the eventual recovery and accumulation of new strength. Themes of truth, aging, and doubt are also apparent and further enhanced by the dynamic of each song. The soft, natural quality of acoustic instruments is complimented by energetic beats and ambient synthesizers.

Written as a single, cohesive composition, each song was created with care and deliberately ordered to enhance the listening experience. The album begins quietly, using only a few instruments and ambient sound effects. As the album progresses, however, it gains new qualities and swells with energy. Eventually, it slows again, circling back to where it started, completing the progression, and the story.

Although best regarded as a whole, the songs can certainly stand on their own. "Dividends" probably best summarizes the entire album with it's slow, acoustic beginning, and build with strings and electronic drums. Tracks like "How To Trust A Liar" illustrate the energetic side with continuous beats and driving pianos; also, vocal harmonies and synthesizers produce a thick, lavish arrangement. On "You And I And The Words Between The Two" soft vocals and acoustic guitar exemplify the simple parts of the album, creating a full sound without using the full array of instruments.

Sundry Inspiration

It's clear that Matt's cd has an honest emotional quality that the patient listener will appreciate. At just under 80 minutes, UTCOA is a massive excercise in mood, and a successful one at that. Don't expect quick, radio friendly singles that work on a single level; these songs have depth that you can explore for days, by yourself or with a significant other. That this is the work of a single person is staggering. If you're looking for honest art in music, I highly recommend this cd.

Matt brought this lovely gem to my attention by route of myspace. Skeptical as usual I was dreading following up on it thinking it was just another band sales pitch. Well, I don't care if it was, because after I listened to each of the songs on Under the Cover of Autumn page, I immediately ordered this disc. Every track is beautiful & poetic! I have the biggest soft spot for The Postal Service so naturally I adore this albums songs: Dividends, This is the perfect time for perfect timing, & How to trust a liar. Oh ya & one more note... this album has that "x factor," like the emotions are woven right into the sounds. I don't know how else to describe... it just has this special-ness to it, you will be touched! Great job Matt!!

It's just plain great. I'm something of a writer myself, but not of songs, and just listening to previews on Matt's myspace was enough to get me into the mood to write. I had to get the cd right afterwards. I've been looking for something musical to inspire thoughts and get my words flowing, and this is definitely it. Awesome job, Matt :)
