Valerie Coates has appeared in oratorio as alto soloist in New York City with the West Village Chorale, in Carnegie Hall with the London Sinfonietta, and in New Jersey with the Choral Art Society, Masterwork Chorus and the Monmouth Civic Chorus. Stage performances include the roles of Mary Jacobi and Mary Magdalene in The Play of Mary Magdalene and the role of Rachael in the Play of Herod with the Ensemble for Early Music; and the role of St. Lucy in the musical drama Increase at LaMaMa, ETC. Ms. Coates has been presented in recital in London at St. Martin-in-the-Fields, St. James’ and St. Olave’s churches; and in New York City on the New York Public Library concert series at Donnell and Lincoln Centers as well as the National Landmarks Concert Series at Federal Hall and Roosevelt’s Birthplace, and the Saint Peter’s Concert Series at Citicorp Center. She earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Early Music Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music, a Master of Music in Voice Performance from the Manhattan School of Music and a Master of Arts in Medieval Studies from Columbia University
