Vanessa Rubin is truly one of the most gifted and seasoned Jazz vocalists of her generation, and Don Braden is a renowned saxophonist, composer and arranger. Having performed together early in their careers, they come together again on “Full Circle” returning to their Midwest Hammond organ musical roots.
This new recording extends the lineage of classic voice/saxophone collaborations such as Houston Person and Etta Jones. Rubin partners with Don Braden’s veteran Organix quartet, with Don on tenor saxophone, flute and alto flute, Kyle Kohler on Hammond organ, Cecil Brooks III on drums and Dave Stryker on guitar. They serve up an array of fast, funky, sultry and soulful foot patting rhythms in which Rubin and Braden masterfully interplay and have fun. They not only create good music, they create memorable experiences that draw the listener in!
Rubin sparks on Lover Man and Hold It Right There. She delivers honesty, vulnerability and maturity on Never Let Me Go and her original Are You Ready For Me. Hey There is further confirmation that swing is home base. Rubin unveils a second original with the funky I Can’t Wait. Fellow Clevelander and jazz icon, Tadd Dameron receives a double tribute with his timelessly beautiful You’re A Joy – wonderfully complemented with Braden on alto flute – and Reveries Do Come True (The Dream Is You) of which Rubin penned the lyric. One will surrender to Rubin’s lovely timbre on Pure Imagination and nod with approval on her openly rich bluesy style on Love Makes The Changes.
Don and the Organix group soar through Braden’s two grooving original compositions, the smooth yet rambunctious Day Play and the hard-swinging shuffle, Twister.
This group has played to numerous enthusiastic audiences, and this recording captures some of the joy, energy and richness of those gigs. This group exudes positivity, fun and swing!
