Comments / Reviews

"...Van Veen musters up a lot of class and depth of emotion. A cerebral, good listening experience."
- Ian Stephen, Rhythms Magazine, Australia

"...sure to appeal not only to blues fans, but to anyone who appreciates quality musicianship and songs which have something to say. A beautiful contemporary blues cd."
- Peter West, Radio 2XX, Canberra

"Well played and recorded, with great tunes. It would be a worthwhile addition to anyone's CD collection."
- Ross Ward, Ward's Xpress

"The songwriting is superb. The 'stories' hit very close to home and although I reside a half a world away, the slices of life he sings about are like looking into a mirror. I would highly recommend that anyone who enjoys a good story and excellent production values, get a copy of this CD."

Sixties Folk-Roots Burns With A New Light
author: Zak Daniels - Canberra Roots Music Review
Van Veen's debut solo CD is both an extension of his work with Man Bites Dog (1997-2000) and also a major shift in direction for this talented singer-songwriter. Both albums can boast very strong songwriting, instrumentation and production values, but Van Veen's solo work also exposes a very personal side to the man and his life. Songs about fatherhood, loss, marriage, suicide, obsession - and a couple of protest songs for good measure - performed in an up-close and personal package. Evidence of his folk-roots upbringing abound - this album will appeal to anyone who loves those rootsy singer-songwriters of the sixties and seventies.
