Album Notes

The Vara-Tones originated in the early sixties when instrumental music was a big thing. The Fireballs, The Ventures, and Duane Eddy were some of the names on the charts and on the radio at that time, and Leo Fender and Dick Dale were beginning to experiment with the outboard reverb unit in conjunction with the Stratocaster and Showman amplifier to create what would be the forerunner to the "heavy" rock sound. After putting in about a year of garage time, the Vara-tones gigged around Southern California during the height of the surfing craze ('63 - '65) and released a single, `Repeto' on the Kay label in 1964. The group disbanded in 1966. But WAIT! In 1997, all the original members except for Dick who had passed away, and Pete who was still mad at the band for ruining his hearing(??) got together for a reunion - jamming together just for fun. This ultimately resulted in "Jetty Subject To High Surf". If you like the vintage guitar-driven surf sound, you will love this album!

Jetty subject to high surf

Really quite a good piece of music. Impressive instrumentals. But here are a two comments: - extend the guitar solos to allow more expression, just let it fly - cut back on the level of reverb, it sounds too tinny and tiring to the ear after 7 songs, plus todays stereos are way better than the 60's. You won't lose the effect, I promise you. I'm already playing it for my buddies (who are also musicians). Great Job.
