ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Biography: Michael Vardal composer/pianist

Michael Vardal is a 30 year-old composer/pianist residing in Hartford, Connecticut U.S.A. Born of Greek descent, he took drum lessons at the age of 10 but having a desire to write actual music, he resolved 2 years later to teach himself piano. Often regarded as a child prodigy, Michael began learning piano and theory largely by reading the World Book Encyclopedia and college music books. A few years later, after a period of being unhappy with his touring pop bands from age 16 to 23, he resigned from this genre to compose exclusively classical music. However, his touring years weren't unfruitful. Of the 26 compositions he composed during those years, the 25 pieces with words were cataloged as Opus. 1/1 - 1/25. For piano and voice alone, these pieces will soon be scored for small orchestra or string quintet. Among Michael's other works include the piano concerto in C minor (written in the late Russian style), several piano preludes, the Piano Sonata in B-flat (Ambiguous Tonality), sketches for a Mass, and a Techno Sonata (a techno/industrial piece in the classic sonata form). Michael still continues teaching himself by daily reading books and essays by: Arnold Schoenberg, Charles Rosen, Alan Tyson, Donald Francis Tovey, Christoph Wolff, Jim Samson, Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov, and Hector Berlioz among others. Currently Michael Vardal is seeking to get his piano concerto and other works premiered. Acquiring many business skills from his band years, he is his own agent. Michael Vardal can be reached at:

I am not really into clasical music, but I really enjoyed this CD

Dave DeLucia

Ultra Romantic music like George Winston on steroids!
I liked the prelude the best of these two pieces. An intiguing combination of Chopin and Rachmaninoff. The Concerto is a sprawling, multi-themed work. Very passionate, a lot of thick chords and rich melodies. I wish the piano had been recorded softer to reveal some of the works many subtleties. Hopefully, Michael will record the other movements of the concerto soon!
