The Music on Vera Deirdre's latest CD, "Before Morning Arrived," projects an atmosphere of simplicity tinged with melancholy, befitting the group's name, which translates to "truth and sorrow."
Disavowing the traditional bass guitar, the band uses the multidinous talents of Fischer for the foundation of their songs, resulting in the album's most startling aspect. Playing clarinet, Harmonium, A clarinet, Bassoon, alto clarinet, bass clarinet, contra alto clarinet, and bass clarinet, his work is often in the form of a drone.
Delivering the lyrics, which also contribute to the album's dark atnosphere, is Schonecker's voice, which is broad and deliberate, yet light and airy.
The Melancholy of "Before Morning Arrived," However, does not fall into monotony. The majority of the album conveys it with engendering too much sympathy from the listener, a nice midpoint between something too happy or too dejected.
-Justin Schell, the UWM Post, Milwaukee
