AMERICANA BY WAY OF THE NETHERLANDS
RECOVERY RECORDINGS RELEASES ELSEWHERE BOUND

Introducing...THE VERY GIRLS: Aggie de Kruijf & Ankie Keultjes, (ok, let's just get to know them by Aggie & Ankie). The Houston, Texas-based VERY GIRLS are a vocal duo who originally made their home in Eindhoven, Holland (that's in the southern part of The Netherlands) before coming to the USA. Their music is a little bit Americana, a little bit "Euro-Folk," according to VERY GIRL, Ankie Keultjes, and oh yes, even a little bit Bluegrass...you'll have to decide for yourself.

You might say their sound is Emmylou Harris meets The Roches, or perhaps Nanci Griffith meets The Andrews Sisters. Think very accessible, engaging, infectiously- melodic songs (thanks to bandmate & mentor, Ad van Meurs, also known to many as the driving force behind THE WATCHMAN), with stunning vocal harmonies (these ladies sing in English, in case you were wondering), backed by a tight, road-tested band of acoustic musician-warriors (guitar, dobro, bass, drums, mandolin...even harp).

All but one track on Elsewhere Bound were recorded in the Netherlands, and produced & engineered by VERY GIRL, Ankie Keultjes. The bonus track, "A Letter To Your Wedding," was captured live at Houston's Anderson Fair, and was produced by Earl Willis (best known for the quintessential live album by the late Townes van Zandt).

Elsewhere Bound is an album about the seduction of American culture & American music...it's a rather romantic vision of our country as seen through the eyes of two Dutch girls...THE VERY GIRLS (Aggie & Ankie). This CD has been receiving praise on both sides of the Atlantic & we feel that if you loved the soundtrack to Oh Brother, Where Art Thou, you will love Elsewhere Bound by THE VERY GIRLS.

Guest Musicians:

*Thad Beckman, Guitar
*Gene Williams, Guitar
*Jeroen Jongsma, Mandolin
*Eugene Ruffolo, Backing Vocals
*Ad van Meurs, Backing Vocals & Guitar

*Recorded at the Daltoon Studio, Eindhoven, the Netherlands

REVIEWS

The Very Girls/Elsewhere Bound
author: Patrick Vijverberg, New Folk Sounds
The Watchman is natuurlijk niet dood, maar toch: leve The Very Girls.

Harmony, Musicianship & Romance
author: Calvin Powers, TaprootRadio.Com
While most all-woman Americana/alt. folk groups like The Be Good Tanyas & Po' Girl stress the “alt” in their music, The Very Girls emphasize the folk side with soft, beautiful, acoustic melodies. Instead of striking a revolutionary pose like so many folk artists do, the Dutch duo, Aggie and Ankie focus on harmony, musicianship, and romance.

Dutch invasion of Texas a hit north of the border!
author: Steve Clarke - Acoustic Planet CHES FM 101.5 Erin Ontario
Every once in a while, I come across a CD that makes me feel like old friends have dropped in for a visit. From the very first track on "Elsewhere Bound" I knew I had found some new old friends. Tight harmonies, excellent musicianship and good writing all combine to make this Recovery Records release a winner. Already on the Acoustic Planet playlist and likely to stay there for a while. I say keep it comin' girls -- your Canadian cousins are looking forward to another helping of Dutch Americana.

I Recommend This One
author: Darrell Harkins, Roots Music Report
Seeing the picture on the CD cover, you might think it was Kansas, Dorothy, but it isn't. It's the Netherlands, where American style country and folk music are appreciated by a growing number of fans and music people. It's interesting that music seems to recognize no borders or boundaries as an international language. Of course language is not a barrier anyway for The Very Girls, because they sing their wonderful harmonies in English with no discernable accent, less than one would hear in say, Minnesota, or New Braunfels, Texas. And what sweet harmonies they are, expressive of love and longing in a universal way. The Very Girls are Aggie and Ankie, and the songs were written by Ad van Meurs [The Watchman]. There are a variety of moods, some sad and wistful, some up and smiling, but they are all good songs performed skillfully with feeling. The multi-talented Ankie produced and engineered all the cuts but one, a recording in performance at Anderson Fair, Houston's oldest and best acoustic listening room, and one of my favorite hangouts when I'm in that area. I recommend this one, in fact I think I've got a Shiner Bock in the ice box, should go well as I put on The Very Girls and sit back and dream of cooler climes...skoal!
