notes
Salt Lake City trumpeter Lisa Verzella was classically trained at the Eastman and Manhattan Schools of Music, where she also studied composition. Her first CD, "Twentieth Century Trumpet," was released in 1999 and received rave reviews.
Ms. Verzella prefers to feature new or unsung works, and her new CD, "Womyn's Work" is exemplary of that. Of the 8 tunes, all by female composers, 5 are world premiere recordings. Styles range from the Renaissance sketches of Hildegard von Bingen, through the dramatic movie-style Williams Concerto, to the recent works of Verzella herself.
The folk tune "Apache Wedding Song," written for Ms. Verzella's recent wedding, may soon become widely used for such occasions.
Guest artists on the CD include the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra, Utah Symphony pianist Ricklen Nobis, local harpist Lysa Ritting and guitarist/singer Stacey Board, of KRCL fame.
Womyn's Work was made possible in part by a grant from the Salt Lake City Arts Council.
