Remember when music was made by people who played instruments, could sing like angels and wrote the kind of classic pop gemgallygows s that stuck in your head all day? Well, Minneapolis' four prodigal sons, the Vestals do. Their self-titled masterpiece is a sublime slice of melodic perfection that has earned praise from esteemed publications including Amplifier, Ink 19 and a recent Rollingstone.com review that said of the music of the Vestals: "...speaking of harmonies, brothers Ben and Jeremy Gordon's voices are magnet and steel..."

Some background:

Raised in a musically nurturing household, brothers Ben and Jeremy Gordon developed their songwriting skills at ripe young ages. This soon became a catalytic source of competition and they feverishly developed their individual styles, but both were vindicated by separately making the finalist round at the 2000 John Lennon Songwriting Contest. Together they've honed their skills, challenged each other, and mixed their different sounds through several projects over the years, finally cumulating the formation of the Vestals in 2003.

To categorize their sound, one would have to jump musical ages and genres from the 1920's all the way through today's promient singer-songwriters like Ben Folds and Rufus Wainwright. Some artists can say that they are influenced by the Beatles or Elvis Costello, but with the Vestals you can actually hear their true essence in the foundation of the song structure and the brothers' mesmerizing harmonies. Although only their first label release, this album packs a full punch of memorable songs that will leave your player on "replay" and leave your humming the tunes long after they've stopped. Listen up, 'cause they're coming to a radio station near you...

Their self-titled debut was recorded by mastermind Brad Cassetto at his very own Melvin Rey studio in Minneapolis.

A good friend of mine gave me this CD recently. I never heard of The Vestals before September/2004. The music on this disc is addictive. I listen to this CD at work, on the train (headphones) and I also put it on at home. This band is really good. They write consistently strong pop songs and the vocals are top-notch. If you like Rufus Wainwright, Jellyfish and The Grays, then I will be shocked if you don't dig this band and this album. I would definitely like to see The Vestals the next time they play in Chicago.

If there were a commercial for this album, there'd be a guy standing on the edge of a cliff, arms spread eagle, head thrown back and the wind blasting back his clothing as if he were a flag pole- underneath him would be an expanse of water and circling birds and the image you'd take with you would be one of absolute freedom, surrender and release from limiation but without giving up on desire, conviction and passion. Wherever these spectrums exist together, that of intense knowing and a lack of needing to know anything, you will find the music of the Vestals. While some have compared their sound to echoes of XTC, Jellyfish, Superdrag, the Posies and others, the sum of their harmonic language, their all-encompassing rhythmic drive and the naked energy that fuels their songs has no parallel yet known to man.
