Album Notes

THE RIDE represents the passage of time, the rise and fall of the sun; the beginning of life to the end; and then renewal; rebirth. I wanted to describe the passage of time, as I experience it, in terms of music. I also wanted to show the many sides of who I am using elements from different styles of music because that, to me, is how most of us are. We are not represented by any one particular thing...but by many things creating a whole unique being.

Music is a tool for communication and it is my intention to instill hope, inspire, encourage, and remind everyone to enjoy life...to live...to dream...and to just plain have fun! Life is what we make of it, and although we have a lot to learn as we live it, I hope that we will strive to make the most of every part; bumps and all.

This CD features elements of jazz, blues, renaissance, pop, celtic, and more! Mostly electronic in nature, Vicki has combined keyboards, electronic percussion and synths, with the smooth sounds of sax, acoustic and electric guitar and even flute and piccolo to create atmospheres which can take one through the day with a song to match each moment.

Vicki's other CDs, "Chasing Dreams", "Finding My Way" and "The Journey To the Places In My Soul" are also available here at CDBaby. Visit her website for the opportunity to listen to all of her music in its entirety on streaming real audio or MP3s. The site url is http://www.vickilogan.com

******************* review by Michael Woodhead, Wind and Wire May '04

I must say I was quite surprised and very impressed by The Ride. Ten very beautiful songs are presented in a variety of styles and rhythms, yet all of them combine to form a cohesive whole. As Vicki says, "I wanted to describe the passage of time, as I experience it, in terms of music. I also wanted to show the many sides of who I am using elements from different styles of music because that, to me, is how most of us are. We are not represented by any one particular thing...but by many things creating a whole unique being."

Vicki begins with a very melodic and pop-like "The Dance of the Sun" that sweeps over the soul, relaxing and inviting us to become inspired. When I first heard "A Piece of My Rainbow," I could have sworn Kenny G was playing the sax; but, no, it was Kenni H(olman) performing the very mellow, but uplifting melody. Follow this with a rather melancholic, medieval Celtic-sounding piece called "Forbidden Love," and then a more modern up-tempo beat-driven "Colors in Motion," "Just to Be with You" faintly reflects a light jazz influence, then the title song with a more New Age instrumental feel.

Further jazz and heavy pop touches highlight "An Engagement with Time" and almost deliver a Kitaro-like atmosphere. Board the virtual train for "Finding Freedom (The Freedom Express)" and be carried down the musical train tracks to the plaintive "Don't Be Afraid," after which we reach the pensive and serene music of "The End of the Day."

These original compositions are uplifting and soul-stirring, grabbing the listener by the ears from the first song to the last, and almost leaving one breathless but fulfilled by the end of the journey. Pick up your copy and go along for The Ride. I'll be taking it quite often.

My Favourite: "The Ride"

The Ride of a Lifetime

Vicki Logan presently has 4 impressive albums available to date, with The Ride as the third successful release on her Carvic Publishing label from 2004, winning a place in the New Age Reporter’s Top 100 albums chart. Personally drawn from her self conclusions about the ride everyone must travel during our day to day life experiences, this album has also held positions in some additional top 100 charts and granted impressive online radio airplay attention worldwide. The Ride is considered inspirational and emotional by recalling the exhilarating roller coaster like moments in life, to times of eminent cross road decisions where one must faithfully reach out for everything life has to offer, or risk losing an opportunity if we choose to remain in the much safer realm of not ever taking a chance at all. There is also a calming and relaxed atmosphere to her music as if acknowledging contentment in knowing that we have tried and are justly rewarded for having done our personal best. This comparison is the easiest way to describe how this album makes me feel. Vicki’s own description is related to the passage of time and how she has experienced progress while composing and producing music, so everyone if free to draw their own self conclusions about how this album makes them feel on a personal level, but believe me, you will feel something positive from her music. Incorporating elements of New Age pop, jazz, and R & B influences provides the listener a fresh perspective beginning with a classic piano piece. The Ride is primarily mid tempo instrumental throughout, enhanced by individual solo performances of saxophone, piano, guitar, and the wondrous flute which Vicki plays passionately. Incorporating elements of New Age pop, jazz, and R & B influences provides the listener a fresh perspective beginning with a classic piano piece. Track 1 The Dance of the Sun has a heartfelt piano melody with background synthesizer starting a new beginning of an adventure into your earliest observations of what to anticipate further down this musical journey. Track 5 Just to be With You offers a harmonious rhythmic ballad that intertwines electronic and saxophone solo into a singular peaceful existence upon adding the engaging percussion beat for blending everything together dramatically. Track 6 The Ride is one of many favorites being New Age pop in theme. This memorable up tempo song with heart pounding rhythms, unbounded keyboard rides, and perfectly timed percussion is truly something to behold on it’s own. Then upon adding the flowing flute melody, everything fits together so perfectly in the instrumental arrangement, you will soon find yourself recalling the melody over and over in your mind daily. Track 8 Finding Freedom is a thought provoking song from this spirited American artist, having deep rhythms, driving percussion, and building flute repertoire which inspire and restore your faith in the very notion of individual freedoms in life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness as if saying, yes we can ! This album is an excellent example of what can be achieved when a talented artist shares a part of themselves by putting their heart and spirit into the creation of their music, offering New Age music lovers a chance to also feel something truly special along the way.

An enjoyable musical journey

Forbidden Love and The Ride were the first songs by Vickie Logan that I ever heard - and I liked them so well that I was compelled to search until I found a vendor that carried her music. It was a search that was well worth the effort. In this, her third offering, it's clear that she is maturing as an artist/songwriter. There isn't a single song of the ten on this CD that I can honestly say I don't like and picking a single favorite would be tough. While easy on the ears, the CD maintains an upbeat attitude. Label this one inspirational.
