"ANA & JOSÉ VINAGRE"
FADO SINGERS
Ana & José Vinagre were born in the fishing village of Buarcos-Portugal
Very early they began participating in their church choir and in the local Community Playhouses doing stage plays and operettas.
At the age of 13 Ana joined the local Folk Dance Group "CANTARINHAS DE BUARCOS" and toured the entire country of Portugal as well as several European countries at Folk Music and Dance Festivals.
In 1972 married Joe Vinagre, a U.S. Disk Jockey, and set roots in New Bedford, Massachusetts.
In 1978 at the insistence of some friends, Ana began to do the New England circuit of Portuguese restaurants and social clubs singing 'FADO', the traditional folk music from Portugal.
Since then they have participated in several Folk Music Festivals, representing the Portuguese Art of Singing. Among some of these festivals include: NorthWest Folklife Festival in Seattle, this Spring, 2002 National Folk Festival, Bangor, ME, Lowell Folk Festival 1990, 94 & 96, Boston Harbor Revival Folk Festival 1991, International Folk Festival in Boston, U. Mass. Dartmouth, Instenstead Folk Festival and Women Singing Traditions Tour in New England, with 5 women from other traditional music backgrounds. The Traditional Arts Council sponsored this Tour. The Vinagres recently had a sellout event in San José, California and have performed on a Cruise Trip to Bermuda.
In 2000 they sang at Fall River Public Library Winter Concert Opening, at the Cambridge Mass. Multicultural Arts Center and Cambridge Boat Club on the Charles River.
"ANA VINAGRE - FADO", was their first record release, which they also produced.
The second CD - PAIXOES - PASSIONS, also produced by the couple was released during the PASSION Tour of New England.
During the summer of 2001 they were contracted as Fado Consultants for the movie "Passionada".
Since both are fluent in English and Portuguese, they are able to communicate with none Portuguese audiences who are not familiar with "FADO". In that respect they both entertain throughout New England, West Coast, Canada and Portugal.
They have been on the entertainment bill for First Night Festivals in New Bedford, Mass. and Providence, RI for the last 12 years.

Ana Vinagre FADO

I had not been familiar with FADO music before hearing a song from this album on the radio. I immediately knew I had to have it and I have been listening to it almost daily since then. The music is infectious and so passionate. I never would have found it if not for CDBaby.

Fabulous! One of my favorite fado CDs.

Ana has the haunting voice of a true fadista, reminiscent of the small fado houses in the Alfama district of Lisboa. Her rendition of "Gaivota" is one of the best I have heard, and she & Jose play off each other well in the sassy "Modelo 49." Can't wait to order their 2nd CD, "Paixoes." As a 3rd generation Portuguesa, I also look forward to seeing them in person on my annual pilgrimmage to Fall River, MA, from my home in San Francisco.
