A cool, dark sound that lies somewhere between Swing, Trip-Hop, Latin Exotica and Alternative Rock/Pop. Laidback, intoxicating tunes with Double bass, 'Spy-esque' jazz guitar, dreamy vocals and plenty of lush noises and exciting rhythms.

Album Notes

The Violet Jive: Original Swing with a cool dark alternative twist!

Formed in 2006 by U.K concoctologist/Musician/Producer Steve Spall (Guitar/Vocals), the live incarnation of the band features Paul beeching -Double Bass and Matt Wilson -Drums. Influences from 50's jazz, alternative rock, trip-hop, blues, lounge and Latin styles help create The Violet Jive's atmospheric, alluring sound. Appealing to a wider variety of hepcats and music lovers in general. (somewhere between The Jungle Book, Portishead, Wes Montgomery, Stray Cats, Soundgarden and Gotan Project... perhaps!)

The 10 track album 'Far Flung' available here is about strong songs, strange melodies, dark riffs and colourful lyrics with sprinklings of musical prowess as opposed to overblown indulgent soloing.

‘Grey Squares’ a catchy jazz guitar driven number swings with dark urban cool, a tale of someone yearning to escape the city life, while ‘Girl In Green’ featuring Jungle book-esque Trumpet and colourful lyrics has a more cheeky slant. ‘Springtime Molecules’ ( just a minute and a half long) is inspired by the seasons and being up and down, possibly Bi-Polar! ‘A Good Energy’ has Hip –Hop style beats with some dark funky riffage, and is again fighting against negative tendencies inspired by a positive girl! ‘Polynesia Blues’ is the only instrumental on the c.d and gives a taste of exotic percussion and atmospheric spy style guitar motifs. The album has a definite jazz, lounge sound without being ‘elevator’, but with some well crafted songs, dark riffs and awesome vocals/guitar from frontman Steve Spall.

So Cool!

I've seen The Violet Jive several times live and really love their music. The 'Far Flung' album is not quite as upbeat as the gigs but apparently it's their first cd from a couple of years ago and is a great way to get aquainted with the earlier songs and sound. My favourite song is 'Far Flung' but then i also go crazy for 'Girl in Green' , 'A Good Energy' and 'Deceiving You' which has some great lyrics. It's too bad if you're outside the U.k as to see them live is the best! Lilly P. x
