Welcome to the Rat Race - Vollmer's first full-length product - an eclectic collection of heady, hardy, and haunting hard rocking songs that really kick. Similar in arrangement to something from early Scorpions, the band injects influences from Humble Pie, Zeppelin, Cheap Trick, and AC/DC to give you a variety of tracks. No particular theme for "Welcome", just the best stuff accumulated over time and remastered! Pick this CD to spend your allowance on and you won't regret it.
Alone Again was the first collaborative effort for Vollmer. Reminiscent of hot, humid, late summer nights in Virginia, wanting some late-night company, completely frustrated, and bored.
Love and a Memory, another team effort, is a take off on the old Love, American Style sitcom. This tune is all about obsession, frustration, and a case of mistaken identity.
Thunder came together at the studio. A collaborative masterpiece!

Reminds me of Govt Mule!!!

I bought this CD just because it had the Beatles cover Hide Your Love Away, which is 100 times better than Eddie Vedders version. When I settled in with the other tunes, they have some similarities to Government Mule tunes. Love and a Memory has an awesome vibe and emotion to it. Also, check out the drummers bass drum beat on that song, sounds like a double bass, but he only uses one! Alone Again is soulful and powerful at the same time. Thunder appears to be the commercial offering on the collection. It's a rocker and fits in nicely. The overall tone of the recording is raw, but in a good way. It sounds like a perfect live performance. A highly recommended addition to your collection!

Great Stuck in Traffic Tunes!

After I picked up Vollmer's second CD Motel 69, I went ahead and gave their first CD a chance. The highlights.... an awesome rendition of the Beatles "Hide Your Love Away" lots of space (which I like!) throughout the song and an interesting vocal interpretation. My favorite on the CD is "Love and a Memory". Interesting lyrics with instrumentation that drives like a freight train! The frustration is felt when Jade belts out the climatic "God Dammit, it's not you!"
"Thunder" sounds like a surprise B side hit. It grows on you.
Downsides...The radio version of Rat Race could easily be dropped and no one would care. The overall length of the CD seems short, maybe because it's easy to get sucked in to the music or that just as you really get into it, it's over. Overall a very solid piece of work with a raw, untamed feel
