This surprising blend of hip hop, pop, and acid jazz (with the occasional surf guitar reference) that the group has fun calling "trip hop pop" has developed an intense following who appreciate voodoolulu's tight original lyrics and her low sexy rap style. The crowd also gets off on the lush, hypnotic vocals provided by Chemda, an emotional powerhouse with the range and depth of Nina Simone, she consistently stuns large and small audiences alike.
Gotham magazine raved about their first CD: "a raw, eclectic tour de force that melds influences from hip-hop, trip hop, and acid jazz. Packed with political consciousness, sexual charisma, and unbridled vocals courtesy of svelte, sexy frontwoman voodoolulu..." Internet reviewer Bill Whiting-Mahoney is a fan of Chemda's "extraordinary voice", and fans have been equally enthusiastic:
"I am crazy sick in love with Miss voodoolulu. Crazy bananaz, ohmygod! I think I listened to it like 10 times at least, the entire cd back_to_back, and I never do that..." -Andrea Millar
"voodoolulu's 'sound' is deeply political, fiercely moving and completely unexpected. her performance moves from scathing social commentary set to hypnotic beats to wonderfully raucous celebrations of her sexuality. as her vocal accompanist, Chemda provides layering, complexity, depth and a really really beautiful voice. this CD is a strong, refreshing debut. get it. you won't be disappointed."

"voodoolulu...Wow, Wow, and another Wow! What a performance...when she sings... it is emotionally overwhelming - there is an intensity in her projection and her identification with her lyrics that is awesome..."

Influences include a double-wide range from trip hop legends like Portishead and massive attack to classic soul sensations like Dusty Springfield ("Son of a Preacher Man"). You can count the live hip hop band The Roots & masterful lyricists like Big Boi & Dre of Outkast as having made an impact. Mix a musical cocktail shaker with the personal revelations of Atlantis Morissette, the political convictions of Ani DiFranco, and the sexually explicit hot & crusty vibe of Lil' Kim, while you keep a vinyl copy of "The Music From U.N.C.L.E." spinning on low volume in the background, and you're starting to put it all together.

I had this cd in my car. I played it all the time. It disappeared. I think someone must have thought it was worth a five finger discount. I bought it again and I try to keep an eye on it. I now put it back in my collection when I'm not in my car. That's how good it is.

interesting, with a haunting image
author: Flattened Coil
Good Part: Great rapping, intersting words-thoughts-ideas, detailed and very layered production, very new york sounding music ----
Bad Part: Every time Chemda sings it interrupts the flow of the music, seems over the top and false ---- the lyric "my pussy milkshake is fresh and etc" is so revolting that I would probably start sucking cock if I had to hear it too many more times.
Please continue and thank you for your creative work.

This is one of the most unique cd's I have ever heard. It should be given 5 stars by at least 5 to 50 people. Where are the people who own this cd and why haven't you rated it yet? If you are considering buying this cd I want to tell you that it is worth every dime.
