Album Notes

Winner of the 2005 Detroit Music Awards for their debut CD, Montuno Salad, Tumbao was formed as a cuban jazz group in the fall of 2003 by conga player Alberto Nacif and sax/flutist Paul VornHagen. Alberto is the originator of the Cuban Fantasy program on WEMU-FM and has played with Dizzy Gillespie, Armando Peraza among others. VornHagen has won several Detroit Music Awards for his playing and has been a mainstay on the scene with his jazz groups for 25 years touring the US, France and Hawaii.
This group also includes Sven Anderson on Piano, John Barron on bass, Javier Barrios on timbales and Bob Mojica and Paul Finkbeiner on trumpet. MONTUNO SALAD is their first recording released in July 2004 and consists of nine stellar compositions written by bandmembers and four Cuban composers, including Paquito D'Rivera, Orlando "Maraca" Valdes and Alvarro Carrillo.
