The Voices of St. John's MCC were named The Best (and most diverse) Gospel Choir in the Triangle by The Independent Weekly in May of 1997.
Their debut recording "Anywhere with Jesus" was nominated for a GLAMA (Gay/Lesbian American Music Award) in the Contemporary Spiritual Category.
While gospel music originated in the African-American church tradition, The Voices of St. John's have expanded on that tradition by introducing gospel music to people of all colors and spiritual backgrounds.
The choir is proud of its diversity - a visible statement of their belief in God's all encompassing love.
The choir is composed of church members and friends from across Central/Eastern North Carolina and includes people who are young, old, abled and disabled, with a mixture of sexual orientations and an enormous cross-section of ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
In addition to their ongoing ministry at St. John's Metropolitan Community Church in Raleigh, the choir has developed a following across the East Coast through their powerful concerts in Atlanta, Fayetteville, Greenville (SC), Baltimore and Richmond; UFMCC District Conferences (Charlotte, NC and Hampton, VA); Durham's Centerfest Street Festival, 1997 NC Pride Rally, 1996 & 1998 Crape Myrtle Concerts, The Wicked Smile Gospel Brunch, Southeast Conference of National GLBT Students at Duke University and Triangle World Aids Day Services at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.
The choir was featured on the internet as musical guests for "Out, Gifted & Blessed," in January of 1998
