Violet Vonder Haar was born in 1988 in an old run-down farmhouse on the banks of splice creek to a hippie riverman father and an organic gardener, herbalist mother. She grew up listening to the diverse music of the local community radio and the folk musicians of the Missouri river valley. At a very early age she felt compelled to add her own voice to the mix, after attending a children's environmental concert. She first took to the stage at the age of eight at an Earth Day festival and has never looked back.
Her first professionally recorded release features Violet singing and accompanying herself on guitar and mandolin on sixteen original compositions. She writes on a variety of subjects, from her environmental concerns to family life and relationships from the unique perspective of a young woman growing up in America in the twenty-first century, with twentieth century ideals.

I only managed to catch mere snippets of Violet's music in the past, so it has become a genuine treat to peruse "Shades of Violet" and bask in the talent on display in this freshman effort by a young artist. It reminds me of days spent in coffee houses listening to artists and songs with heartfelt messages. I can listen to this CD and conjure up the smell and taste of Irish Creme in the company of good friends. What a wonderful treat it has become to listen to "Shades of Violet."
