Perfect combination!

Sloan Wainwright's voice alone makes her songs worth repeated listening. BUt this CD offers a great balance of songs (types, speeds, textures, voices). WHY can't the other Wainwrights put performing for their audience first and tortured self-expression second? What a pleasure to hear Sloan blend her songwriting, natural talent, and craftsmanship to make this lovely recording.

Stellar Set

If you listen to all 4 of Sloan's CDs, you see an amazing progression and growth. On "Cool Morning" Sloan sings with the relaxed confidence of a master song stylist at the peak of her game. Always a strong voice that brings to mind for me Bonnie Koloc, "Cool Morning" is both a success as an interpretative singer with U2's "The Streets Have No Name" and as a songwriter. 3 tracks are my favorites: Amazingly enough -- because I usually gravitate to music that sets my toe to tapping -- my VERY favorite is the lovely slow piano ballad "From Where You Are." This is such a great ballad that every diva from Diana Krall to Norah Jones should be recording it; simply a classic melody with Sloan's marvelous delivery. My other favorite is "Good Day to Live" with its belting no-nonsense good time feel; it's a song that celebrates time to smell the roses and has support from Sloan's great guest musicians. My third favorite is "Illuminate" with its original feel and life-affirming lyric. "Cool Morning" delivers a powerful punch, both with strong songs and great singing delivery. There are NO weak spots! Bravo, Sloan!

What an awesome voice!

What great songs. Really. These lyrics are meaty, not pop mash. You have to listen. Think Joni Mitchell. I got to see Sloane live in Rockville, Maryland. She's one of those rare performers that sounds as great live as she does on her recordings. Can't wait for her to come back. Hey Sloane...I wanna be one of your backup singers!
