Greg Walker’s Bio

Greg began studying piano at the age of 7 in Cross Lanes, WV. After a year of lessons, he was sent to study classical piano with Joseph Grider at West Virginia State College in Institute, WV. He continued with lessons through the ninth grade when he decided to stop piano so he could concentrate on drums and percussion. In the sixth grade, Greg was approached about learning to play the drums for the school band because drummers were in short supply. He fell in love with the instrument immediately. He began private lessons right away with Ben Miller at Marshall University in Huntington, WV. While in Junior and Senior High School, Greg continually won the first chair spot in All-County and All-Area competitions. In the tenth grade he took over the High School drumline, in which he played, instructed, and wrote and arranged music for until he graduated. In addition to school activities, he played drumset for various rock bands and religious groups. He also landed a spot as the drummer for the WV State College jazz band during his senior year of High School.

Greg then attended college at Indiana University where he majored in percussion performance studying under Professor George Gaber. After two years of playing in orchestras and percussion ensembles, Greg decided that classical music was not the direction he was interested in. For the next couple of years, he played drums for rock and jazz groups out of Huntington, WV, and eventually ended up in Oak Island, NC in the winter of 1988. Almost immediately he was asked to play piano for the Oak Island Presbyterian Church where he remained for about 2 years. He found that his piano skills came back very quickly, and the constant performing associated with church work brought his playing to a higher level than before. He then began playing at Ocean View United Methodist Church, where he is now their full-time Director of Music. He still plays drums with the occasional rock or jazz band and also plays drums for Ocean View’s contemporary praise band. He has recorded three albums and is currently working on his fourth.
