Album Notes

A virtual musical merry-go-round. This CD takes you from lighthearted fun and frolic with "The Lady's In Love With You," to the slower pacing of "Round Midnight."

Jeanette's vocal stylings are a combination of Sheila Jordan, Jo Stafford, and at times Annie Ross. Her attention to lyric and the emotions they evoke are particularly expressed in "You Don't Know What Love Is," and a tune she wrote, "Two Rights Will Always Make A Wrong."

The guitar stylings of Greg Walker are crucial in the group's success. Greg's rhythm playing and harmonic sense are key elements in his arrangements. It shines brightly in Sonny Rollins' "St. Thomas," and in "Chega De Saudade."

On this, their third album, bassist David Crites lends his voice to the harmonies and LA flutist, Jimmy Walker weaves his magic on several selections.

If you thought you didn't like jazz, this is the perfect way to introduce yourself. The stylistic twists and turns are never freaky -- always polished though spontaneous. Think of the eloquent performances of Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, Rosemary Clooney and Diane Krall. Now check out Walker & Kays - always in good taste!

Engaging vocal arrangements
author: Ellen Collison, Cadence
Walker & Kays are an engaging trio whose vocal arrangements are very much in the Gene Puerling Hi-Los, Singers Unlimite vein. Kays is in the spotlight.... and is supported by Walker's spare but elegant comping as she comes up with admirable interpretations of the lyrics, along with some fine understated vocal improvisation... listeners should be well satisfied with this release.

Polished and Spontaneous - Liquid and Alive
author: Rick Mattingly, Louisville Times
Guitarist Greg Walker and vocalist Jeanette Kays have been working together for 20 years and have developed a musical rapport that is shown to fine advantage here. At first listen, the Louisville based duo's relationship may seem to be built primarily on their abilities to harmonize together and with bassist David Crites. However, the connection between voice and guitar is an equally crucial element in the group's success. Walker's rhythm playing and harmonic sense function as the blood pulsing through Kays' musical veins, nourishing her melodic and rhythmic improvisations and making them liquid and alive. From such jazz standards as Round Midnight and St. Thomas to such standards as When Sunny Gets Blue to Kays' funky Two Rights Will Always Make A Wrong, Kays and Walker perfectly complement each other's stylistic twists and turns, delivering performances that are simultaneously polished and spontaneous.
