"The Walnut Groove" is what happens when three musical nuts get stuck in a 200 year old farm house in Maryland during a major snow storm. Fortunately, the Walnut Grove Band found themselves "stuck" in a wonderful recording studio known as Echoes. This CD is packed with music that simply rocks in a soulful fashion and the quality of sound on this CD is amazing as is the evolution of this Virginia trio in 4 short years.
This second CD release from WGB was recorded in one long, snowy yet blazing session that lasted nine days in January 2004 and so the CD sounds very cohesive despite genre shifts from rock to blues and then to folk (Rainbow) only to push you over a cliff (Terra Cotta) and into a red hot, blazing pool of "Cheap Guitars".
Mark "Walnutt" Stewart's trademark "swingin' & singin" style of both electric and acoustic guitars match the soulfulness of the lyrics and the melodies that he sings. Fluid bass and clockwork drumming from John "Wellwisher" Stamat & Casey "Helgamite Jones" Firkin complete the trio's very tight and creative roots based rock sound captured beautifully on this CD. Also featured are Chicago blues style harmonica riffs from Washington DC blues harp legend, Pete Del Vitto.
Have you seen any good CD art lately? Maybe, maybe not, but we know you haven't seen anything like this art package. Not only did WGB produce a professional and artistic CD sound, "The Walnut Groove" contains a 16 page, full color booklet with lyrics and original artwork from the band & its associates. Seven Virginia and Maryland artists & photographers contributed artwork for this CD package design.
This CD belongs in your collection, but instead will likley remain in your CD player which is fine with Walnut Grove Band.
These guys play live all the time in the Virginia and Washington D.C. region. Go see the live show when you get the chance! Its a great performance and a good time.
Josh Papreck now plays bass live in WGB, formerly of Chicago and now residing in D.C., "Chuckles" is set to begin recording with WGB to produce a third CD in October 2004 following a very busy summer concert season. Until then check out "The Walnut Groove" and "Assorta Nutz" here on CD Baby.
