Album Notes
Walt Powell has a unique style blending elements of Neo-Classical and Jazz/Fusion. He was often compared to the style of Tony Macalpine in the late 80s, but as his career has progressed, his style has diverged significantly from Macalpine's. Powell is from Columbus Ohio, a small breeding ground in the 80s for guitar shredders. He achieved widespread acclaim in central ohio, due to his technical proficiency and fusion of classical music elements with heavy rock guitar.

You got it.
Great sound man, your tempo is perfect for the style you play. Too many of these younger people just can't hit the tempo. And without the right rythym pace no matter how good you are it will come out bad. But you have nailed it man.

Great guitar tone!!
Walt you are a great technician and I really enjoyed Fire from the fretboard!! The live guitar solo has monsterous technique and you can cut heads with the best of them. I just wanted to suggest that you do more neo-classical stuff, not many people can play GOOD neo-classical and your stuff is right up there with Macalpine and Yngwie.

Walt Powell..perhaps the only shredder to burn on a vintage Fender Mustang, Powell possesses a liquid tone, wicked technique, and a classical melodic sensibility. This adds up to the obvious Malmsteen-isms..so few points for originality, here..but Powell's jubilation as he works over the fretboard is striking, and it's hard to keep his euphoria from seeping into your synapses."

I'm glad to have found you accidentally. Also, as a former resident of Columbus, OH, a salute to you in the capital of the Buckeye State. Many fantastic players who love Vai and have formidable chops of their own, wouldn't dare record a tribute to him. You are definitely a seasoned, mature talent - not a trace of gunslinger "faster than you" ego in your playing despite the stuff you are playing. Not for lack of an awe-inspiring reservoir of technique either. Its obvious you are in it for the music, not the other peripheral stuff. You just cant get to your level if it is not about the music. I dig your impassioned phrasing and celebrate the note choices - the elusive art of finding the note others wouldn't have thought of playing before you did, after which they couldn't have imagined anything else would have fit. You've got it Walt. Thanks for sharing it. I'll turn on my local San Diego band of guitar-nuts to the fine music you are making.

Very Pro Stuff!!!
I love the whole thing!! My fav would be track 3 (Surfin) because of the great chord changes in the melody. Etude is cool too (piano). I love this CD because it has the original "fusion" touches like Return To Forever, Satriani, Vai. Very pro stuff! Ahead of its time. This is a great CD!!
