"14 Fish, 2 Bottles and a Shoe" or "14 songs and 3 guitar instrumentals" adds up to the latest 17 tracks from New York-based singer-songwriter Walt Sargent. Walt is a frequent winner of the Island Songwriter's Showcase songwriting competitions and is often a featured artist at local events.
"Writing a song is like catching a fish. You never know what you're going to get," says Sargent. "I want to trust my instincts and go with what comes up."
What comes up ranges from a joyful pop, ballads, jazz and reggae-influenced material. The disc also has a few poetic acoustic guitar interludes, reminiscent of Bert Jansch.
"Sometimes, what comes up looks like a shoe, but turns into a gorgeous fish", he continues. "'Mr Know-It-All' was not what I put my line in the water for, but instead of throwing it back, it went off in an unexpected direction."

Thought-provoking, pleasing to the ear and intellectually compelling
author: Island Songwriters Showcase
This collection of songs shows off (Walt Sargent's) considerable talents...from the now operatic, now understated vocals, to the competent guitar playing, to the thought-provoking lyrics.
Walt, who teamed up with Huntington-based producer Dave Cook, also an ISS member, to put the CD together, demonstrates in this collection of tracks why he has often won the Writer's Choice award at ISS.
His songcraft is well-developed, producing work that is at once pleasing to the ear and intellectually compelling. Standout tracks include the ballads "Don't Go Now" and "Me, Myself and I."
Most of the songs feature only vocals and one or two guitar tracks, with the opening track, "Beautiful," being an exception. In "Beautiful," Walt shows that in addition to playing delicate finger-picked patterns and melodies, he can also make an electric guitar scream.
