Album Notes

Originally a classical trained violinist, Martin Permer started writing his own music when he was given a sythesizer on his 15th birthday. Then he needed a special female vocalist that would suit his romantic and very original compositions.

One day when visiting his friend, he met up with a beautiful blonde girl on the stairs. He asked her if she wanted to sing and she said yes, hence the pop duo "Waltz for Debbie " was in creation. The band name comes from a masterpiece recording by the legendary Swedish jazz diva Monice Zetterlund, together with the Bill Evans trio in 1964. Annica's style of singing definitely inherits the delicate and soulful touch of monica.

Waltz For Debbie's "Gone & Out" is the debut album for the project, which features the lead vocals of Annica Lundback, teamed with the musicianship of Martin Permer. The musical style touches upon synthpop, but also has a lot of other pop influences worked into the sound, created with the addition of guitars, flutes, the piano and acoustic drums to flesh out the synthesizers and drum machines. It's really hard to describe the lead vocals here.. They're very lush, full bodied, and beautiful. The singing style is a more aggressive pop approach than Christa Belle's (of Hungry Lucy) approach, but her voice is that pure and soothing. The album starts off with "Once Upon A Time", a very captivating pop tune that is both wistful and lonely, while also being incredibly catchy. This song captured me from the first listen... I sometimes have to force myself to move on to the next tracks and not just repeat this one over and over. "Fade Away" is another song that I was mightily impressed with, although it does start off a bit slow, the chorus is where the song really shines. The roll of irresistibly catchy songs continues with "You And I And Brett And Alice", but the next few songs aren't quite as sharp. "Leave You With A Smile" is a good song in just about everyway, but the vocalist is really rushing the words out during the chorus, which hurts the effectiveness of the song. "He Loves Anna" is, however, right back on track, with a song that is both great to dance to and as catchy as all get out. The gratuitous guitars in "I'll Be King" don't end the album on the best of notes, in fact they seem very out of step with all the other aspects of the song, but one full-out clunker on a album of otherwise gems is tolerable. While not all of the songs are instantly as catchy as say "Once Upon A Time" or "He Loves Anna", there really aren't very many songs here that stumble in quality (other than "I'll Be King"). This is a extremely impressive album, very professionally put together. I highly recommend you do yourself a favor and check this band out!!!!
