WANDA KING REVIEW FROM JUN/JUL 2004 BLUES REVUE
"Art Tipaldi can add the Freddie King household to his list of cross-generational blues families now that Dallas' Wanda King has checked in with From a Blues Point of View. Seven of the nine songs are King compositions that show a knack for intelligent turns of phrase and a deep appreciation for gritty. Texas-style blues. "Big Girl" and "Trying Not to Get Caught Up" are tough shuffles, and "Fishing in My Pond" hits a soulful skank-blues groove. The sophisticated torchy "Old Flame" and two excellent slow blues, "SOS" and "I Refuse to Play By Your Rules", round out the set, along with covers of Johnny "Guitar" Watson's "Cuttin' In" and father Freddie's "(S)he Put the Whammy on Me" .King brings a jazz vocalist's approach to phrasing and melody to her fine singing; she's assembled a very good band featuring Shawn Phares (keyboards), Kenny Stern (drums), Sonny Collie (bass), and Robin Sullivan (guitar), augmented by six-stringers Smokin' Joe Kubek and Tutu Jones. Very Impressive."

Wanda's blues are mellow but soulful. I love her lyrics especially on "Big Girl in a Small Girl's World" Monday night blues or Friday midnight blues...soul and depth.
