notes
Originally released as "WarfRat Tales" in 1983, this reissue is the equivalent of a double LP and contains approximately 80 minutes of music. Expanded from the original 9 bands and 15 songs, "Unabridged" now features 13 bands and 28 songs! Bands added to the compilation include The Gun Club, To Damacus, Urinals and The Up & Out, standing proudly alongside The Last, The Rain Parade, The Leaving Trains, Wednesday Week, 100 Flowers, The Question?, Earwigs, The Point and Hector & The Clockwatchers. All 13 new songs are previously unreleased in any format and most of the original tracks are being heard on CD for the first time. Original producer Vitus Matare compiled "WarfRat Tales (Unabridged)" and supervised the mastering from the original tapes. The 20-page booklet was designed by Don Brown, who did the artwork on the original album. New liner notes from Vitus Matare, iTunes/Rhino guru Gary Stewart and noted pop musician Jason Falkner are added to the original notes from Falling James of The Leaving Trains.
Vitus Matare recorded these bands in a garage on Lyceum Avenue in Mar Vista, California (a suburban are of Los Angeles, near Venice). The bands were recorded on a Dokorder 4-track tape machine with no outboard equipment. Vitus, then a member of The Last, went on to play in Danny & The Doorknobs and Trotsky Icepick, as well as produce countless other important (as well as forgotten) bands that made up the LA scene in the 1980s and '90s. Today, he is a sought-after designer of post-modern contemporary homes in the Santa Monica Mountains.
THE LAST: Joe Nolte, Vitus Matare, Steve Andrews, John Rosewall, John Frank. THE LEAVING TRAINS: James Moreland, Manfred Hofer, Tom Hofer, Loco Caboose. 100 FLOWERS/URINALS: John Talley-Jones, Kjehl Johansen, Kevin Barrett (with Vitus Matare). EARWIGS: Dan Willard, Kevin Kerns, Tom Underhill, Dale Turkle. THE RAIN PARADE: Will Glenn, Matthew Piucci, David Roback, Steven Roback, Eddie Kalwa (with Brian Norris and Kendra Smith). TO DAMASCUS: Sylvia Juncosa, "Sleepy Sue" Rollin, Randy Santeman. THE GUN CLUB: Jeffrey Lee Pierce, Ward Dotson, Rob Ritter, Terry Graham. HECTOR & THE CLOCKWATCHERS: Eric Kenneth, David Nolte, Radny, Slambang. WEDNESDAY WEEK: Kristi Callan, Kelly Callan, Kjehl Johansen (with David Nolte, Steve Andrews and Vitus Matare).
