Here's what the critics are saying about Water Babies "Draw Me a Bath":
"Water Babies know that few instruments sound as distinctive and defining as the Hammond B-3, so they offset the organ's whirling, reedy tone with bright flairs of trumpet, lax drumbeats and the sort of deep bass that permeates the seat of your pants and rattles around for several minutes before settling down. The seamless, free-form funk jams that result have a transformative effect on listeners. Even at tiny clubs, you'll find the audience on its feet, shaking its collective rump along with the loose grooves." - Tizzy Asher, Seattle Post-Intelligencer
"I keep fantasizing that some group will fuse the funky grooves of 1970s cop-show jazz with the abrupt, mind-melting segues of the mid-1970s Miles Davis groups. Plying similar yet more straight-ahead territory, Water Babies manage to bring the funk free of the usual jam-band excesses." - Christopher DeLaurenti, The Stranger
"Water Babies have the musical chemistry and chops that carry their free-form compositions to tingly heights. Plus, they know how to lay down a big fat groove and that's a good thing. - Don Rauf, Seattlest.com
"Nicely done, Water Babies - congratulations!" - John Gilbreath, Host of Jazz Theater on KEXP, and Executive Director of Earshot Jazz
"This band is so spontaneous, it has such chemistry, that to see them live is fantastic!" - Lou Taylor, KMTT, 103.7FM The Mountain
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Water Babies is all about the energy and spontaneity of improvised music.
WB came together as an experiment to see if they could strip away everything they knew about form and chord changes and just ride The Groove. What they have found has exceeded their wildest expectations.
All of the songs on "Draw Me a Bath" are one-take improvisations rooted in The Groove which will have you shakin' your thang!
Every Water Babies shows is full of surprises and unexpected twists and turns. Magical interaction and tight coherence ensue as the band develops new musical ideas in every moment. They draw inspiration from each other, from the audience, from the atmosphere of the room, and from their musical forefathers, groups like Herbie Hancock's Headhunters, Miles Davis' Bitches Brew band, Maceo Parker, and Medeski, Martin & Wood.
Above all, Water Babies never lose their main focus:
To deliver the most distinguished and funky improv grooves and to share the joy that comes from creating magic in each moment.
Water Babies are:
Jason Parker :: trumpet & flugelhorn
Maximilian Schlosshauer :: Fender Rhodes piano & Hammond organ
Aaron Kassover :: upright & electric bass
Dave Elvin :: drums & percussion
Special Guest :: Melissa Reaves :: vocals on "Bitchen Melissa" (www.cdbaby.com/reaves2)
Great work!
The groups really works well together and seem very sensitive to each other. It's clearly improvisation, but they seem to meld material in ways that are natural. In particular the bass player holds the group together and anticipates the few changes they make. The drummer also holds things together and has excellent time. I like the approach they take as a group.
