Wayne Gillespie & Nigel Gavin: Live at the Bunker
By Tim Page
Now this is a treat for the folk music devotee. Released last year, it was recorded live at ‘The Bunker’ in Auckland’s Devonport in 2003, with engineering by Steve Garden. The nuances of a live folk performance are faithfully captured while managing a clarity of
recording that makes for a comfortable listen. Gillespie and Gavin both boast a fairly comprehensive CV in the New Zealand folk scene, and although Gillespie now resides in Sydney, he makes frequent trips home to perform. Other contributors to this effort are Caitlin Smith on vocals and Tony Waine on bass. The track listing is a selection of songs sampled from many years of writing and playing, and range from some rather intense minor-keyed efforts such as Gabriel Street, to the satirical So Trendy. This is true folk quality music, not a sniff of synthesis, expertly played, and with obvious audience rapport. A fine listen.

Cool and groovy. I'll treasure it always

Got the cd. I'm really enjoying it. Nice live but intimate
feel all the way through and with surprisingly good sound. All the
songs come alive nicely. At one point when you launch into that
lovely'skin' song , the mood is so evocative of the old days at the
Poles Apart, I could almost weep with nostalgia.
Interesting how our interpretations of our own songs have changed
(perhaps subconciously) over the years. No 37 is now sung with some very
subtle variations in the melody or chord structure which I found very
beautiful and gave the song new life for me.
Also liked the lyric developments in 'so trendy'.
Cool and groovy. I'll treasure it always.

Gillespie has a great way of weaving words together, ... a strong sense of landscape and place, and a way of expressing personal feelings, ideas and emotions universally. His songs manage to be personal to both himself and the listener - one of our unsung heroes. Steve Garden NZ –2005
