"Psalms and Shanties" is the 2nd release, 2nd ep, and 2nd outing this year (2007) from The Weather Underground. It is a collection of 5 songs described as 4 'stories' or 'shanties' & a 'hymn' or 'psalm' . The record recalls everything from Americana to late-80's U2. A stand-out track is "Something's Gotta Give", which sounds like a cross between Otis Redding and the Velvet Underground, and has a trumpet section (which is credited to a Los Angeles street performer) and sleigh bells that give the song an anthemic texture. Other great tracks include "Old Man Jude" and "Neal Cassady". 1950's sounding "Outsider Benches" is a unique track that unfolds as you listen and "Poete Maudite" is a great example of heavy subject matter backed by an upbeat, melodic background which brings to mind Johnny Marr, The Walkmen, and Leonard Cohen.
The Weather Underground have not yet released a full length, but as their young career and consistently inspired releases suggest: enjoy the ride, follow closely, and keep your ears and eyes wide open.

Really enjoyed the last ep and this is one is just as good. Looking forward to more very soon. I normally don't go for Americana rock type stuff. But this hits home.

This a record for the times. I just got it and i love it. I love the band, their vibe, their mantra, and their name. I just saw them open for the Walkmen at the Independent in San Francisco and they blew me away. I cannot stress enough how refreshing it is to see a band whom i've never heard hold their on at a show like that! Looking forward to more
