In 1982 Welch was accepted into the Atlantic Center for the Arts master study program with musician/drummer-Elvin Jones, poet/writer-Allen Ginsberg and film producer/photographer-Robert Frank.
Welch’s current work is produced within these mediums of expression. Performances and installations include music, sound, film, spoken word, still image & text based upon his life experiences playing the drumset.

Michael Welch has musically collaborated with the following Jazz-Blues-Classical-Rock&Roll and Avant Garde musicians/poets and film makers: Robert Frank, David Amram, Mark Hodgson, George Benson, Noble Watts, Elvin Jones, Allen Ginsberg, Ira Sullivan, Charlie Byrd, Herb Ellis, Derek Bailey, Jon Rose, Peter Kowald, Sam Rivers, Brian Auger, Elliott Randall, Barney Kessel, Clarence Palmer, Frankie Avalon, John Butcher, Gary Smith, Charlie Robinson, Murf The Surf and Mr. Magoo. Welch began watching Black & White television in 1957 and playing the drumset in 1965. Early gigs included performing Rock and Roll music in smokey lounges with musicians twice his age. Leaving high school and home at 16 he began his journey in music. Gigs included backing up strippers, go-go girls, comedians and multiple variety acts with and without clothes. The road included gigs from Florida to New York to Mississippi. A 1968 FBI record documents a one-nighter in the Hattiesburg jail. In 1976 Welch was offered a music scholarship and returned to school. As a university student he began studying electronic, jazz and classical music. Welch also began performing within the jazz and orchestra environment. It’s during this time period he began experimenting with the concept of multiple sticks, brushes and mallets on the drumset. As a result in 1980 he authored the book “QUADRAGRIP” and began self-producing original music for his Illegal Radio label. Early recordings include The Neanderthal Yodeler, TV Willie, I Need A Gig and Club Owners Worst Nightmare. Welch has over 100 projects logged for release on his label Illegal Radio.
