notes
Christmas Past features Werner John's Early Light ensemble with special guest Eugene Friesen of the Paul Winter Consort. Instruments include recorders, flute, guitar, lute, oboe, violin, cellos, and harpsichord. (42 minutes)
From the 2005 review at christmasreviews.com:
"Christmas Past lived up to my very high expectations. The musicianship is remarkable, and the recording quality is top notch, too. The strings and wind instruments seem to burst with clarity; you are right there in the room with them. The mix of early music instruments is such a great match for the holiday season-- warm and emotive, bright and joyous. I especially loved the deep voices of the oboe and cellos. The music selection is excellent, too; the nine tracks largely feature ancient carols, including terrific gems like "A Rose Unfolding" (Praetorius' "Es Is Ein Ros") and a marvelous closing "Angels Rejoice!" medley of seven carols.
What a delightful album! Consider pulling the Early Light Consort's Christmas Past into your holiday future!"

Everyone to whom I've given this CD as a gift tells me it's one of their favorite Christmas albums. It certainly is one of my favorites as well. There is a serenity that is energetic to this music. Calming yet awakening.
Fabulous!
author: JosieI don't ever want to be without this collection. Best Christmas album ever!!!
The Christmas Season is not all about Jingle Bells
author: Dan ( a real person in Mystic CT)My wife and I first heard this music on Christmas Eve in a quaint New England gift shop where we had ducked out of the falling snow. The warm fire, the aroma of Christmas trees, and the peace and joy of this music wafting through the shop instantly created such indelible memories. Now Christmas Eve will never be the same without this music. We treasured the tape that we bought that night. Unfortunately, so did our dog Tess. She devoured it. I am so thankful that CD Baby was there with a replacement CD. Joy To The World! I hope you love Werner John's music as much as we do. Merry Christmas!
Soothing, uplifting, wonderful
author: SheilaPurchased this year, this CD will be the one I play to close out the evening on Christmas Eve. Gentle, lovely, this is music to listen to with just the lights on the tree for illumination. "Pachelbel's Christmas" is a particular delight.
lovely Christmas/holiday music
author: M.I am replacing a worn out tape of this collection. We wouldn't enjoy the season as much without it. Thank you!
beautiful and different
author: ArlinI first bought this CD in 1989. Every year it is the one album of Christmas music I can listen to repeatedly. When I've become sick of all the holiday music coming at me from all quarters, this music remains fresh.
