notes

"Wes Cunningham's second album sounds like the missing link between XTC's "Skylarking," and Jellyfish's "Belly Button." Repeated listenings to this gem reveal layers of musical and emotional nuance... An achievement even more remarkable in that Wes conjured it up completely out of his own meager funds, making up for the lack of resources with an abundance of talent and will. Not too often we can usher out the names of Jon Brion, but to do so here is not only accurate but properly complimentary to the stunning beauty of these songs... This is not fast food. This is a sit down, pull up a chair and stay awhile collection of conversation pieces. A runner for best of the year, so ya know: Extremely Highly Recommended"-NOTLAME (www.notlame.com)

"Fans of smart, highbrow pop will find no fault with this album."-AMG (www.allmusic.com)

"'I Love Eleanor' - This harmony-rich number will please fans of Ron Sexsmith and Eric Matthews"-Entertainment Weekly

"Wes Cunningham cuts a very tasty niche on 'Pollyanna,' falling somewhere between the sensitive, new-folk style of John Mayer and David Gray and the post-Beatles jangle pop rock of groups like XTC and the late, lamented Jellyfish - A"-Philadelphia Daily News

Hi there. All I need to now is if you are the John Wesley Cunningham who was in the Sinai about 24 years ago, living in a camp with paratroupers. I´m one of the "cave-people". Please contact me with an answer so I can keep on looking if you´re not him. Bye from Nina in Sweden.

  • THE BEST CD EVER
    author: David Mustard

I listened to this CD and it was like listening to the music that you would hear about on the news.I think that Wes Cunningham could go on American Idol and sing and he would win FIRST PRIZE.:-)

  • Alternative Pop does not get much better than this.

Pollyanna was in the first batch of CDs I bought from this site. They were all good, but this one is great. The songs are near perfect blend of pop and rock, sweet but with a sharp and sometimes dark edge. Obviously a work of much love and feeling. I have listened to it many times, but like the best music, it keeps revealing hidden pleasures. All I can say is ... I want more.

  • Hook, line and catchy...

Wes Cunningham really impressed me with this his second album of material. Many of the songs, caught me and I was singing outloud, at work, with headphones on. So not only am I embarrassing myself, I'm introducing the office to Wes. Anyway, I really liked the track "When I Fall (Over and Over)" which I think sums up the feelings of love very well. He's very straight-forward with his lyrics, taking you on a short story about an episode of his life (whether real or imagined). Although you won't find this album playing in a trance or techno -based club, you could definitely kick back in your car or home and feel good, brew in hand (if you got 'um).

  • This album rocks! Wes has an amazing voice, and sweet style of his own

This cd is incredible! Wes has an amazing voice that he really knows how to use. Plus he has a sweet style of his own that you can really jam to!

  • Four seasons in one.... album
    author: Julian Long

I stumbled across this album during a visit to the website of another talented singer/songrwriter (Matthew Ryan). Wes appears to be unknown in the music press and multi-national record stores in the UK - for how long? Pollyanna is a superb blend of all of the shapes and colours of the four seasons. From the spring-like, spiralling harmonies of 'Only You Know' rising upwards towards the beauty of the summery Beatlesesque 'Good Good Feeling' to the autumnal sobriety of the beautiful 'I Fall For Her (Over And Over)' to the Radiohead/Jeff Buckley feel of a complex and challenging emotional winter in what appears to be an intensely emotional and emotive hidden track following immediately after 'Glory'. An isnpired and inspiring collection of beautful, wonderfully emotive songs not so much of love lost but the hope of love yet to be found, and the wondorous and mystical journey of exploring and attemtping to understand. Happily we never fully understand, nor do we cease from exploring our feelings and experiences through the vibrancy and richness of fine storytellers such as Wes Cunningham.

  • This is a find!
    author: Country Paul

I heard Wes Cunningham in an interview on WFUV, found his music very interesting and his approach honest, and ordered the CD. It does not disappoint - quite the opposite, in fact. My current personal "hot track" is the exquisite "I Fall For Her (Over & Over)" - in a perfect world, this would be a hit. This is a consistantly very-good-to-excellent album that's well worth the price of admission. (Be sure to keep playing track 11 to find the phantom 12th track, one of the CD's best.) Highly recommended.

  • long overdue collection of inspired songs
    author: Rex

Polyanna finds Wes a bit more chilled, a tad slower, and maximizing the joyous humility inherent in his performances. The humour and wit that reverbated in the past is still there, but it's a lot more subtextual and subdued--emotional truth and thoughtful introspection seems to be the priority here. The simple sincerity with which he expresses his love inspires and radiates hope. Excellent!

  • A Revelation!
    author: john@savetheocean.net

Wes's music almost defies description. Certainly it comes with a strong pop sensibility. The album is peppered with musical statements that are throwbacks to bubble gum pop from the late sixties and seventies--think Bee Gees or ELO.. But there is an alternative side that utilizes acoustic guitar and electronic effects that would make Beck proud. I am sorry I cannot be clearer I am not a Rolling Stone critic with an exhaustive supply of arcane musical comparisons on hand. What really sets Wes apart though is his lyrics and his voice. His music, for lack of a better description, is sweet and his voice, a soothing, relaxed tenor, winds its way into your head like a velvet snake. This album is somewhat like an anti-Beck album. Beck's last, Sea Change, was an ode to a downtrodden lover. pollyanna could not be more different, despite sharing some aural complements. This album is like one long love letter, broken into 11 unique paragraphs. The whole production is relaxed and warm and sweet.

  • Wes Cunningham's Pollyanna is a gem!
    author: John Fitzpatrick, Ashburn, VA

This is one, big wet kiss to the one Wes loves - our the one you do! It's more blissed out than his prior "12 ways" disc (which rawked), but no less an excursion across the whole pop landscape. Tell your friends, family and passersby - buy Wes, see Wes live, propagate Wes.
