It took a long year and I maxed out four credit cards but my new CD Possible is no longer just possible...it's actual. When I boarded a plane for Los Angeles in March 2005
with my brother & bassist-extraordinaire Tracy Hawkins in tow the plan was to be there two weeks and record four songs. But that first trip led to a second and then a
third. Come August I had recorded 12 songs over a total of seven weeks. I'd been hit by my own musical bus & I never saw it coming. I should have sued.
If you put a thousand musicians in a thousand separate rooms and give them an hour to emerge with a song you'll get a thousand different songs. And a thousand different requests for payment! Like fingerprints, no two of those songs will be exactly the same. Possible is my musical
fingerprint.
Sure, I've got influences. All the way from
those Beatle guys to guys who sound like those Beatle guys. Paging Todd Rundgren & Neil Finn. They're all lurking about but they've been house trained & know their place. In the end Possible is mine. I've got receipts for it.
Possible has eleven of my own songs and a version of Lindsay Buckingham's Save Me A Place with extra butter. Some of the songs, like Hey Starlene, Dream Of Dreams, and Some Of Me, are about real stuff. Others, like Very Down and Ice, lean more toward fiction. That means nothing real was happening the day I wrote them. However it shakes out, all these songs are a part of me. I'll need them back
when you're done.
I used to front a band called The Hawkins Brothers in Lexington, Kentucky. We did alright. We signed with Strugglebaby Records of Cincinnati and even got some attention out in California. Legendary producer Tom Werman
said we were as close to a sure thing as he'd ever heard in a business where there are no sure things. Then he quit the music business and bought a bed & breakfast.
During my days with The Hawkins Brothers I was in a hurry. I never really knew where I wanted to go but I had to get there as soon as possible. So if you listen to Possible
expecting the hurried sound of The Hawkins Brothers you'll need to readjust a little. These new songs enjoy exiting the freeway and crawling along the musical backroads occasionally.
I'm working on a system where I magically appear whenever someone plays their copy of Possible. I've heard Rumpelstiltskin invented "magically appearing" back in the 80's. My system has two problems so far. First,I often don't end up at my intended destination. Kind of like when I plan my life. Secondly, even after the disc stops playing I sometimes can't unappear and end up hanging around feeling awkward. So don't be surprised if I turn up in your room as you're listening. But have a place for me to sleep in
case I can't leave.
