The Whippersnappers are three good friends, all professional musicians, who have been making music together for over three decades. Individually, all three are touring and recording members of nationally known groups but together as the Whippersnappers they have assembled and mastered their own rich and unique repertoire of string band music. Featuring George Wilson, Peter Davis and Frank Orsini, all singing lead and harmony and playing a variety of instruments, this lively trio presents an entertaining mix of songs and instrumentals. Included are: acoustic guitar, 5-string banjo, solo and twin fiddles, viola, and piano. Styles featured are: stately Old-world tunes, rousing mountain music and bluegrass, sprightly celtic jigs and reels, Uncle Dave Macon songs, and old and new folk songs. Here’s more about the individual members:
George Wilson-is one of the most highly-regarded and sought-after fiddlers on the Northeast’s contra dance circuit, but he is also a versatile multi-instrumentalist at home in many different musical settings. Whether playing banjo, fiddle, guitar, 12-string guitar or bass, George’s impeccable rhythmic lilt and drive enliven any musical idiom. He has toured Europe with fiddler Allan Block and appeared as an accompanist or band member on many recording projects. He is a long-time member of Fennig’s All-Stars, a seminal hammered dulcimer group with whom he has made several recordings, appeared on “A Prairie Home Companion”, and played many large festivals. George’s own CD’s, “Northern Melodies”, “The Royal Circus”, and "A Collection of Northern Tunes" are showcases of his signature fiddling and sizeable tune repertoire.
Peter Davis-is another multi-instrumentalist of impressive scope, playing more instruments and styles than can be encompassed in one group’s repertoire. With the Whippersnappers he plays guitar, piano, 5-string banjo and clarinet, but in other groups he adds plectrum banjo, saxophone, and others to the list. Peter also has been part of many recording projects and at one time was part of the back-up band for John Phillips (of “Mamas and Papas” fame), with whom he did some international touring. Peter also performs as part of Jay Ungar and Molly Mason’s band, for their monthly radio program and for festivals and other special events. He has also recorded with Jay and Molly and appeared with them on many productions of “A Prairie Home Companion”. Peter also leads his own swing and jump-blues band called “Lindy Hop Heaven” which is at the forefront of the Northeast’s swing dance scene. They play many dances, festivals and camps and have released two CD’s: “Lindy Hop Heaven” and “Goin’ to Lindy Land”.
Frank Orsini-could be called the instrumental specialist of the Whippersnappers, playing exclusively fiddle and viola on the various styles in the group’s repertoire. His versatility as a fiddler has kept him in demand as a free-lance instrumentalist and accompanist on a variety of styles (country, bluegrass, blues, swing and more,) both in live performances and recordings. As a bluegrass journeyman he has played in bands with mandolinist Frank Wakefield and also banjo great Bill Keith. He is also a long-time member of the band led by hammered dulcimer player and singer Walt Michael, with whom he has made several recordings and toured extensively in the United States, as well as taken three tours to Ireland, Scotland and the Shetland Islands.
