TRIUMPH OVER ADVERSITY
TRAVELLING SHOW
The new album from
DERVISH
“DERVISH has risen phoenix-like from its Eurovision flambé with an album worthy of any folk music stage. The musicianship on TRAVELING SHOW is as graceful as any of the more reflective moments of The Chieftains or Planxty. Dervish stay true to their roots, a very fine album”
The Irish Examiner
"How do you get over the embarrassment of the Eurovision adventure Dervish endured earlier this year? Release one of the best long players of your career, that’s how."
The Irish Star
"Dervish’s attention to tunes render them with an undeniable effervescence. “The Masters Return” captures the incendiary quality of the band’s live performances, the driving percussive forces of bouzouki and guitar propelling fiddle and flute towards delirious infinity." The Irish Times
"The 55-plus minutes of music that constitute the group’s tenth album include some of the loveliest singing I’ve ever heard Cathy Jordan do. There’s also a glorious selection of tightly arranged instrumentals. Banish any lingering Eurovision memories, Sligo’s finest are back on form."
The Evening Herald
"Travelling Show is moody, soulful and epic. Cathy Jordan is at the forefront and she shreds the rulebook and pulls the best vocal performances of her career."
Hot Press
"Dervish are at their best. Cathy Jordan has one of the most distinctive voices in Irish music." The Irish Mail On Sunday
Dervish have just released their eagerly awaited new album (their tenth) in all good record stores. Produced by the legendary John Reynolds and featuring a host of talented guest musicians, the album is called Travelling Show. The album will be released on 26th October 2007 with a launch taking place at Sligo Live Festival, where Dervish will perform with The Buena Vista Social Club, Alabama 3 and other artists.
Ever imaginative, their latest album features new arrangements of rare and unusual traditional songs such as Lord Levett. Cathy Jordan refashioned this poignant lyric by writing a new melody and asking the superb Triona Ni Dhomhnaill to play harpsichord. Jordan also sings a spine-tingling rendition of Suzanne Vegas’ The Queen and the Soldier. The results are enchanting. Newly composed material, Crucán na bPáiste by Brendan Graham and Grainne by Nashville song-writer Sharon Vaughan and Cathy Jordan, is tender and moving; while My Bride and I is a hauntingly enigmatic tale written by Canadian Dan Frechette, featuring Steve Wickham’s skillful string arrangement.
For those who like their traditional music fast and furious, Dervish prove their muster with their trademark high-energy instrumentals ably aided and abetted by Triona and the inspirational Rick Epping among others. In essence, Travelling Show is a beautifully crafted album; a multi-facetted amalgamation of influences, traditional and contemporary; showing Dervish at their best – a band constantly reinventing them-selves and exploring new musical territory while keeping in touch with their traditional roots.
TRAVELLING SHOW IS IN ALL GOOD RECORD STORES NOW.
