Album Notes

White Buffalo are a three-piece in their late twenties hailing from Scotland (Phil Campbell), New Zealand (Evan Jenkins) & Australia (Hossi), playing out of London with a distinct rock sound.

The band were conceived back in the spring of 1996 when Campbell met Jenkins together with former bass player Matt Round. With the backing of a major label they recorded Campbell's classic solo album, Fresh New Life. Faced with limited commercial success and lack of label backing the boys moved on, whilst continuing to play through a long period of despondency throughout the south of England.

Hossi filled Matt's spot on bass in 2001 upon which the band experienced something of a re-birth. Hossi already knew Jenkins from years back in Australia having attended the same music school in Perth. With this new lease of life the band's fortunes quickly changed by way of a 3-week support tour to France, Holland, Germany and Poland. Dreams intact, White Buffalo quickly went to work on material for a new album.

Waiting To Go Home was independently released at the end of 2002 on White Buffalo's own Stamina Wax label. An intense blend of energy and emotion mixing full on guitar driven rock with more intimate acoustic and piano-led songs, Channel 4 (UK) described the disc as "a sound crying out for wider attention".

All or Nothing opens the album, quickly followed by Tempted. Both songs evoke a real sense of urgency; the latter's spooky vocals bringing the tension to an almost uncomfortable feedback-drenched conclusion.
Wasted is probably the best example of the bands mellower side; a simmering piano ballad performed with passion but beautifully minimalist in its production, with Campbell doing his best Tom Waits and Hossi hitting the high harmonies.
Storm Trooper showcases White Buffalo's gift for tension-building; a soulful blues progression played on Hammond organ, with wide-open drums and a gnarly bass line. Phil delivers yet another nodule-defying vocal performance whilst the song features no less than two very satisfying climaxes.
Kerrang noted the "Foo Fighters influences on display throughout Obsession's catchy rock stomp" (October 2002) and along with the thrashy hidden track Time Bomb George, these songs particularly capture the raw magic of White Buffalo live.

White Buffalo's is a stripped down sound making good use of the natural three-piece dynamic, a pure sound that they have endeavoured to maintain on their recordings. But to experience White Buffalo at their best, then you have be there at a live show. The gritty determination etched on Phil's face whilst he delivers doesn't tell the half of it, whilst Evan hits the drums so hard and fast with Hossi in total synch, its as if their lives depend on it. The live show is "rare and special... an emotional roller coaster" (www.shakenstir.co.uk, fuelled by a raw energy. White Buffalo fang it every time they take the stage.

With a new album scheduled for late 2003 and a shared musical vision for the band and Stamina Wax label, White Buffalo continue to triumph and evolve. There's nothing manufactured about it.
