Album Notes

Halfway between Memphis and Nashville, that’s where Whitney Duncan grew up in the small town of Scotts Hill. Some say that explains the bluesy-rock edge heard in Whitney’s country tunes. She attributes it to her long time influences ranging from Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis to Tanya Tucker and Shania Twain. It was at a very young age that Whitney first started listening to Elvis and watching his videos. Not long after that she knew without a doubt that all she ever wanted was to sing. Her first public effort went anything but well. With her brother accompanying her on piano, a five-year-old Whitney sang at her church. “Mama said that if it weren’t for the words, you wouldn’t even know what the song was,” she says, with a hearty laugh. Unfazed, the little girl set her mind to mastering her vocals.

Soon enough, the performance at church was just a charming anecdote. Duncan’s voice became stronger, her singing more confident and before she knew it she was traveling to fairs, festivals and competitions. She sang at local benefits, at Christmas programs and at church. At 14, Duncan traveled to Paris with a group of young singers to perform at Euro Disney and at the Notre Dame Cathedral. A year later, she started making trips into Nashville to pursue a career in country music. She added songwriting to her long list of talents, learning from some of the most accomplished writers in town. Whitney was signed to Big Picture as a writer in 2003. During that time Whitney co –wrote several songs including “My Roots are Showing” which was featured in Dr. Dolittle 3. Later Duncan was presented an amazing opportunity to work with Kenny Rogers on a duet that she herself had co-written. “My World’s Over” was released on Kenny Roger’s Ultimate Hits album. This led to her opening several of Rogers shows in 2004 and the making of her first music video, which was featured on GAC and CMT.

During the past summer Whitney opened up the CMA Music Festival with her rendition of the National Anthem, following it up the next day with a slamming set of her original songs on the riverfront stages where she caught the attention of the crowd with her song “Skinny Dipping”. She was invited by the National Convention of State Legislators to open up their conference with the National Anthem later that summer. Whitney can be found most weekends near her hometown in Jackson, Tennessee performing with The Grove.

Duncan currently writes for My Good Girl Music Publishing Company/Sony ATV Tree in Nashville. She is working closely with her producer, Mark Bright, to record new material. She spends her time doing what she loves, writing music and performing out every chance she gets. And with Whitney, what you see is what you get!
