My thoughts on "Any Thought on That?"
author: Bill Butler
It has been said of Whitney Steele that she is a star on the rise. The way I see it her star has been burning brightly for quite some time and now she is beginning to get the notice and attention she deserves from a widening audience. Word has it that she learned to sing before she learned to walk. I don’t know about that but an amazing natural God-given talent was clear in Whitney from a very young age so yeah, she has been at this awhile. Today she is a amazingly beautiful confident woman with a radiance and passion you can actually hear and feel through her music.
At first listen you know a few things are going on which are extraordinary. This is something more than pop mediocrity synthesized in a studio by just another pretty face.
Whitney Steele has delivered a masterpiece of a record with her first full length CD “Any Thoughts On That?” – These ten songs showcase Whitney’s star quality perfectly. Amazingly gifted and talented singers of this kind are rare. Think Norah Jones, think Linda Ronstadt. I think of those and I think of Whitney Steele.
Whitney’s passion for excellence, vision, perseverance, integrity, and hard work are also obvious to anyone who has the good fortune to hear her music. In other words she worked very hard and persistently to get this album right. Here perfectionism pays off.
This is a record you can sit down and just listen to from beginning to end each song being brilliant on its own merit…from “Last Love” which was released as the first single to “Portrait” a torchy love ballad there is honestly not an unlistenable track anywhere on the CD.
Of particular note is “Long, Long Time” written by Gary B. White, a hit for Linda Ronstadt in the 1970s. “Love will abide…take things in stride…sounds like good advice” From the beautiful six string acoustic guitar strumming and her velvety smooth vocals to the string section Whitney nails it authentically with this romantic tear jerky ballad.
A favorite of this listener is “You won’t see me crying” – wow…featuring the acoustic guitar, tambourine and backing vocals of Gin Blossoms frontman Robin Wilson, shows Whitney’s amazing vocal aptitude and versatility. ( If you know anything about music you will know that this song could only be done by a real professional. ) Whitney just makes it sound easy to sound so good …oh yeah…easy for her maybe.
Another song I like a lot is “Crazy” which showed up on Whitney’s first record release six song ep “Whitney Steele”. The new version is rawer and pared down on this record…less on the production and more on the passion which makes this an authentic statement on heartbreak. Sit down and listen to these lyrics.
Whitney Steele’s brilliantly inspired and passionately delivered “Any Thoughts On That?” belongs in your record collection. I am giving it five stars here.
