Album Notes

Who Hit John? is a five piece Kalamazoo based string band that, since 2006, has been bringing their high energy original blend of Old Time, Bluegrass, and Folk to stages and venues all across Michigan. Their first album, “Old Gray Road,” was nominated for three "88.1 WYCE Jammy Awards" and sold more than 500 copies. Now the band has carefully crafted their follow up album, “Heirloom.”

“Heirloom” is an interpretation of the generations of American music that has preceded it as well as it is a forging into the future of roots music. The follow up album was recorded in a 100 year old barn in Kalamazoo and has a rich, resonate quality that takes listeners to a certain place. The musicians pulled inspiration from historical events, love, loss, and societal observations from their own lives to write the thirteen original tracks on “Heirloom.” The result is a blend that evokes true emotion while showcasing Who Hit John’s versatile vocal, lyrical, and instrumental stylings.

Who Hit John? - When these guys play live they are the most rockin’ string band I have ever seen and heard. They have taken inspiration from several traditional music forms (old-time, folk, bluegrass and blues) and updated the context without any gimmickry or compromise in the music. They are fans of Old Crow Medicine Show, who attempts a similar thing, but with OCMS my favorite tracks are all cover songs, where with WHJ, all my favorite tracks are their originals (and I find them way more compelling than anything by OCMS!). I can’t get enough of tracks like Watering Hole and Conscription Man, with powerful lyrics, and arrangements that are loaded with hooks. I love the 5-part unison vocal choruses! These guys deliver their music with such intense passion and energy I can’t help but be inspired to move and sing along. This is 5 guys having a blast, and at one of their live shows, I witnessed something I’ve never seen before: a crowded dance floor of mostly guys, who seemed helplessly compelled to dance awkwardly without partners and sing along. WHJ? has a musical sound and style that runs deep in the collective pysche and DNA of the common man. Their music is a celebration of life, love and death, earthy and authentic, and they are completely deserving of their rapidly growing fanbase. Mark Duval
