The album is comprised of songs that walk a perfect line between the sweet and bitter, and the sentimental and cynical, and is perfectly bookended by the opening track, “The Ballad of Benson Creek,” and the finale, Williams’ own earnest version of Bruce Springsteen’s “Thunder Road.” The eleven performances are carried out by an impressive trio of multi-instrumentalists, including accomplished singer/songwriter and co-producer Peter Mulvey (Signature Sounds Recording), Dan McMahon (Wandering Sons), along with Williams on vocals, harmonica, acoustic guitar and piano.
On this compelling debut the Milwaukee-based singer/songwriter “boasts a voice that sounds several decades older than he actually is, lending his songs of love and loss a gravity they might not otherwise possess” and “never slips into blandness or forces the quiet drama” [The Onion].
Williams grew up with a guitar in his hands, performing from an early age in cafés, bars, and eventually rock clubs throughout his home state of Wisconsin and around the Midwest. He hit the ground running with a ‘64 Gibson that his mother bought at a garage sale, listened hard to everything from the Beatles to Buckley, and somewhere along the way began to write the tunes that would become his own voice.
His live shows have been described as having “...everything you could hope for... message, melody, and hooks” (Vital Source), and feature his facile guitar and thoughtful, distinctive tenor (imagine the honeyed side of Ryan Adams, Jay Farrar’s earthy grit and the playfulness of Sam Cooke). In little clubs and smoky bars around the Midwest, armed with memorable songs and engaging charisma, Hayward Williams is quietly building both a following and a career the old-fashioned way, one night at a time.

A blissful aural 'happening' and literary experience
author: Carsten
Hey Hey Hayward: Just went through a first 'reading(?)' of "Another Sailor's Dream". Feels almost as much like a literary experience as a blissful aural 'happening':
- Woody Guthrie, Huddie Ledbetter, and Nick Drake are smilin' in Heaven. Chet Baker tells them this record is even cool enough for him….now that's Cool.
- Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, and Bruce Springsteen are getting together to discuss this record over coffee.
- Flannery O'Conner knows she can't describe textural landscapes like this.
- Tom Waits is quoted as saying "Now that's the voice I wanted God to give ME!"
- Leonard Cohen went through two packs of smokes listening to this...nearly smiling once...wow!
- Lucinda Williams wants to have your baby...she started the hormone treatments and will be ovulating shortly.
- Van Morrison wants to kick your ass. He hates it when someone can create something as gifted as his works.
I can't find a flaw…yet...and I'm listening carefully.

Buy Me, Buy Me, Buy Me
author: Lynn Pettinger / Americana UK
Ahhh, where to start? The exquisite gruffness of a manly voice that belies the strip of a lad who appears on the photographs? The moving, intelligent storytelling, from which “Doctors” and “Problems with Hemingway” stand out – but only just – from the crowd? Or the new-alt-country-blues (and will you forgive me that phrase) of the sound, put to beautiful use on ‘Devil’s Lament’? In truth, its hard to put it into words; this is a fantastic record, one that’s a treat from start to finish. On first listen, the cover of Thunder Road strikes a jarring note; when your songs are as good as Hayward’s there seems no need to walk in another’s shoes, but several goes later and it melds in seamlessly. You’ll like this.
