DJ Williams- guitar, vocals
( HE'S NOT A DJ! )
DJ Williams was born in Plainfield, NJ and grew up in Richmond, VA and started to hit the music scene at 16 years old. A ground breaking instrumentalist and self-taught guitarist has established a unique sound in acoustic & electric guitar. Donald Jeffrey Ilory Williams, Jr. started to play the piano at just 4 years old and along the way picked up the guitar, the bass, drums, and clarinet and became quite proficient at all of them. Now DJ is amazing crowds everywhere with his guitar wizardry backed up by his 5 piece "Projekt".
The last several years have been very productive for DJ Williams as he got the chance to play up and down the east coast, sharing the stage with Keller Williams, Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, Lake Trout, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Marc Broussard, Citizen Cope, Perpetual Groove, Benevento/ Russo Duo, playing the Moon Music Showcase in New York, just to name a few. He has completed two solo albums, "Time In A Teapot" (2002) and "More On The Inside" (2003) as well as collaborations with other musicians on albums for local bands. Currently, DJ has just finished a collaborative album with a trio called the DJ Williams Projekt which has now evolved into a quintet. Richmond is still his main headquarters where he has developed a very strong following here and the surrounding cities. "I just hope to keep expanding and sharing what I believe is a new kind of sound that is progressive and always full of surprises."
Gordon Jones- Saxophones, vocals
Brought from the outskirts of Indiana, Gordon Jones is the pushing force and furry behind the horn in the Projekt. Having been on the road w/ Jazz Poet Society and leading funk power houses like Yo Mama's Brass Band and the Oregon Hill Funk All Stars the band could not have asked for a better member to join the family. On stage Williams and Jones have a great music rapport as Jones plays the wildman to Williams' cool counterpart.
Dusty Simmons- Drums
With a pocket deeper than Bill Gates and a natural feel for anything from hip hop to jazz to latin and drum & bass rythyms Dusty is one of the main driving forces behind the sound of the Projekt. Simmons is credited to the hardcore band Lamb of God as well as the Oregon Hill Funk All Stars. There is nothing this kid can't do and shows it at every show.
Brian Mahne- Keys
Brian "the robot" Mahne. What can we say.... Give this cat anything and watch him turn it into music. With a hint of Herbie Hancock and a dash of Jimmy Smith Brian comes up with a sound all his own. A Richmond, VA native who's mission is unknown but destiny is determined. Watch him on stage but don't bat an eye cuz you WILL miss something....
Todd Herrington- Bass
Todd Herrington, a native of Richmond, VA began playing bass at age thirteen. By the age of twenty, he was a veteran of the chicken wing circuit, having played with his band in clubs all over the East Coast. He has shared the billing with names such as Dave Matthews, P-Funk, Blind Melon, Agents of Good Roots, Pat Mcgee Band, and Fighting Gravity. Recently, Todd placed 2nd in Virginia's annual bass "Thump-Off" competition. Todd offers a wide and varied range of musical experience and has become a much sought after sideman. After joining the Projekt it was like new life had entered the band. Todd's grooving bass lines will have you convinced that all men are not created equal. He is also handy with the guitar, drums, keyboard, and harmonica. Having passed his ten-year mark as a bass player, Todd shows no signs of slowing, and brings a unique blend of enthusiasm and experience into his work. In his own words, "It has to groove, plain and simple."

DJ is one of the few guitar players that can blend many musical genres tastefull
author: Joseph Jenkins
No, he is not a “D.J.” but his name is DJ and his 6
piece Projekt will definitely make you move your ass.
DJ Williams is a 23 year old self taught guitar player
that brings to mind Grant Green, George Benson, and
good ol’ Jimi too with his own twist. Keller Williams
calls him "my brotha from a different motha" on his
radio show Keller''s Cellar before spinning the track
"Up All night" off their first record. There newest
album is a thoroughly funky exploration of jazz,
fusion, and soul grooves with inherent heaps of
experience and diversity among the performers. The
band describes it as “a soulful ensemble of jazz, on a
melodic R&B vibe, laced with a grooved down hip hop
backbeat.” Williams’ smooth, innovative songwriting
and playing is the centerpiece around which orbits a
fiery formation of brass, drums, bass, and keys. With
the energetic Gordon Jones on sax, the infinitely
capable drumming of Dusty Simmons, huge swells and
thumps of bass from Todd Herrington, colorful trumpet
lines by Mark Ingraham, and masterful keyboard
additions from Brian Mahne. The projekt has truly come
to fruition. Even with a closer listen you can still
find elements of latin, reggae, drum & bass, and blues
in the mix. There are not too many guitar players that
can tastefully pull off a broad genre of musical
styles... this is how he probably got the name DJ.
