Album Notes

Beyond the Velvet Rope, the first cd of instrumentals from guitarist J. Russ Willoughby, is melodic metal at it's best. Willoughby's axework provides an abundance of strong hooks and melodies that stay with the listener. These are songs, not someone playing a thousand notes per second. Fans of Satriani, Schenker, Moore (Gary), and even Vandenberg will definitely want to check this out.

In addition to playing all the guitars on Beyond the Velvet Rope, Willoughby also handles drums and most of the keyboards. Two tunes, "The Open Road", and "You Still Move Me" feature the keyboard work of David Frey.

A well-rounded package, Beyond the Velvet Rope has all the elements that make a heavy guitar instrumental cd great: Chunky tones, tastefully executed solos, catchy hooks and an excellent production.

A JOY

In my view music should be unlifting. The best will make you feel good when you are low and even feel better when you are fine. This cd, along with 'RIVETING' has this 'feel good factor' in spades. It's hard rock with melody. It's exciting and it is extremely well played. The production is excellent.I bought the two cds together from CDBABY and the only reason that I didn't play this one again as soon as it was finished was because I wanted to see if the second one (RIVETING) was as good. It is! If you think you can only afford one, then you're wrong! You cannot afford to be without such excellent music if you have the least inclination to like heavy, melodic, uplifting, instrumental guitar music. You NEED both of these cds.

Excellent - musical, lyrical, powerful quitarist

I really appreciate skilled quitarists. This guy is great. Much more musical than Satriani or Vai in my opinion. Enjoy listening to Willoughby's CD's over and over. Riveted is also great. It is a toss up between them.

Why have I never heard of this guitarist before?

Instrumental guitar albums are hard to rate, especially in the flooded hardrock and metal genres. But in the case of J. Russ Willoughby (whom I have yet to find a website for), I can honestly and highly recommend "Beyond The Velvet Rope" to those of you that have more than a few Shrapnel or Guitar Nine recording artists in your collection. Willoughby is about both melody and solos. It's that fair balance that will put this CD thru my speakers for many years to come.
