Will's early influences included 60's folk recordings from his parents' LP collection. Bluegrass entered his musical life during his Montana years in the 70's and it was then that he also started writing songs.
As the title implies, this CD is a compilation of Will's music which was created when his mother asked for one cd with all his songs released at that point. In 1987 he had recorded Northwords with Anchorage fiddler and songwriter, Shonti Elder. That was followed in 1991 by a second collaboration of original material with Shonti, called Homefires. In 1996, Will released his first solo CD, the middle of nowhere, a concept album of original tunes and songs loosely based on the changing of seasons in Alaska. Mom's Picks has all of Will's songs from those three releases. Will has another CD released in 2004 with a driving theme called "15 Hours of Driving".
The songs on Mom's Picks range from the historical (Alaska Highway), Alaska seasonal songs, poignant songs about friends, family and lovers to hilarious songs about fast food (Plastic Flowers), television and pickup trucks. The style is acoustic Folk with a blend of bluegrass and Celtic flavors with a rich acoustic guitar, beautiful harmonies and support from fiddle, dobro, banjo, mandolin and more.
Will makes his home in Fairbanks Alaska where he lives with his wife, Trudy Heffernan and two children, Molly and Liam.
