Winters Bane is perhaps best known as the band that Tim "Ripper" Owens fronted back in the 90s before he was tapped to replace Rob Halford in Judas Priest. WB's guitarist Lou St. Paul has kept the name alive ever since with a rotating cast of players/vocalists, and on REDIVIVUS he's hit a home run. This album is a combo of classic power/thrash metal with stellar vocals by Alexander Koch (Powergod), awesome drumming from one time Metalium/Helloween drummer Mark Cross, and killer riff work by Lou St. Paul. If you're a fan of Nevermore, Annihilator, Megadeth, or any other power/speed metal with a lot of crunch, REDIVIVUS is highly recommended.

Ten seconds in and it already rocks harder than Megadeth’s last album

None more metal. There’s no hanging around at the start of this one. Your finger will barely have left the play button and the first solo from Lou St. Paul will have already started ripping its way over a crushing riff and thunderous drums. We’re ten seconds in and it already rocks harder than Megadeth’s last album. Technical metal returns.
Winters Bane are most famous in metal circles as being the band Tim “Ripper” Owens was in before he replaced Rob Halford in Judas Priest. This is slightly unfair on guitarist and founder Lou St. Paul, who went on to release a second excellent album under the Winters Bane name entitled Girth, which has since been rebranded under the Kill Procedure name. Another album, Season of Brutality was also recorded, but never released.
Winters Bane now are a very different prospect to the band that recorded the concept album Heart of a Killer with Ripper. With Girth the band became much heavier, but with Lou taking over lead vocals, the range of Ripper could not be replicated. After years of searching for the right replacement, Powergod vocalist Alex Koch was recruited for Redivivus alongside St. Paul (who also handles bass) and renowned drummer Mark Cross.
What they’ve produced is a brutal metal album exhibiting everything that makes metal what it is. Superb technical musicianship, searing guitar solos, thunderous drums and soaring, powerful vocals. All the trademarks of a great metal record are there in the band and their abilities. All that remains is the songs. And from the Megadeth-thrash of Seal The Light, with its lyrical nods to Lord of The Rings, to the double-bass drum pummeling of Dead Faith and the shred-fest of Catching The Sun, with its rousing chorus, to the razor-sharp riffs of Remember To Forget, every track demonstrates everyone one of the traits mentioned and melds them into perfect songs of aggressive, technical metal that reminds me of Hollow and Nevermore.
There’s no need to dissect every song. This record is an astounding collection of the purest metal you could wish for. No metal collection is complete without this CD.
