Album Notes

Live in the Studio and Never Before Released

"NOTICE: Contains Some Adult and Non-P/C Content"

Back in the early 1960's when Jonathan Winters was a household name and the funniest guy in America, he went to Bell Sound Studio in New York City to record a few radio commercials.

Well, someone left the tape machine running and captured Winters (and his co-announcers) just being themselves.

For many years these wildly funny, slightly off-color and definitely politically incorrect recordings were an underground sensation--passed from friend to friend.

Now, you can hear Jonathan Winters at his best, as he riffs, ad-libs on scripts, makes up characters on the spot and leaves the people in the studio unable to control themselves.

Did the radio spots ever run? Who knows, but they are available now in this limited time offering.

COMING ATTRACTION: CD includes bonus track -- a 5-minute sample from the forthcoming, never-before-released spoken word/comedy album by the late Jason Holliday, star of the award-winning 1960s documentary film, "Portrait Of Jason."

This 2007 Darn Good release is titled "An Audio Portrait of Jason: Jason Holliday" and will soon be available via CD Baby.

REVIEWS

A must for any Winters fan

The Underground Tapes is Jonathan Winters at is improvisational comedy best and bluest. The highlight on this comedy CD has to be the Abraham Lincoln material where Winters plays Lincoln, General Grant, Mary Lincoln, a slave, and General Lee to name a few. He does take a few liberties with history but this routine alone makes this release a classic.

Historically interesting and damn funny this candidly recorded set of Winters doing radio commercials in the early 1960's holds up well 40 years on. If you like JW, this is worth having.

This is some funny stuff.

This is a unique recording of Winters just being Winters. Surely stuff he never did on TV. If you're a Winters fan you will want this in your collection.
