notes
The old-time spirit of The WIYOS mirrors that of the
medicine shows of the 1920's and 30's, when black
and white musical traditions mixed liberally and
genre distinctions didn't exist between blues and
country, ragtime and gospel, or swing and hillbilly
music. Accordingly, The WIYOS write songs that are
equally influenced by music from the Blue Ridge
Mountains and New York City, mixing the more
urbane sounds of Django Reinhardt, the Gershwin
brothers and Fats Waller with the unrefined country
fervor of Gary Davis, Doc Watson and Skip James.
The WIYOS make music that will transport you back
to an era when vaudeville performers were skilled
entertainers as well as accomplished songwriters
and instrumentalists. In this "pre-war" American
culture, music was made for personal enjoyment
and community gatherings - farmers, miners,
teachers, salesmen, preachers, gamblers and
traveling artists sharing songs on front porches and
in town squares for the pure pleasure of making
music with their hands and hearts.

Scudley Dee Ba Bap!
author: Leanna BucklandFinally something different. I stumbled upon these fellas at Winfield. Bye Bye Baby definately a fav. Love that scat. Swing and harmonica blues. Lovely mixture of sounds.
Long Live Oldternative!
author: Jay JonesI first heard these talented guys on XM's Bluesville and instantly liked their style. The Porcupine CD is great from start to finish with Blue Drag, Bye Bye Baby and Ida being my favorites - for now! Would love to see the WIYOS live if they ever get around the Reno area.
wow!
author: Peggy WoodenWe've been enjoying this CD since September, when we discovered the wonderful Wiyos at Winfield. This copy is on it's way to Berlin, Germany, for a friend with delightfully eclectic musical tastes!
Fanatic
author: Robert ColladayI heard half of a set in Winfield this year and I was hooked. I really enjoy the combination of great songs, great showmanship and great musicians. When I got home I ordered the first two CD as soon as they came back in stock. They have been in rotation in the CD player since then. Porcupine was a surprise compared to what I had heard in Winfield. It really showcases the band's talent as country blues musicians. My favorites are the haunting "Molly", "Rising of the moon" has some great surprising in phrasing, and "Blue Drag" has a very contagious drive. There isn't a single miss in this collection of hits. If you like music you will love The Wiyos.
Must Buy!
author: Marshall McGillThis album never fails to brighten my mood with upbeat sounds and these guys are amazing musicians.
These guys are really into this stuff!
author: Michael JonesI came into this music through Jim Kweskin and actually played in a jug band for a couple of years, so I jumped on the CD after I had heard a few tracks. The sound and feel of the 20's and 30's have really been captured and I love the excitement the band brings to this genre.
Great CD!
author: Bryan LordAwesome music. The whole album is great. Thanks!
The road shown by the heart.
author: Carl M. NielsenThis is a lovely acoustic blues/jazz album, with elements of the skiffle/jug/spasm-area. A variated collection of tunes is played in a relaxed and natural manner. Seems real and honest, without phony gimmicks. Musicians playing the way they are dictated by there hearts and souls, doing what feels right for them, never compromising on there feelings, but following the way pointed out from within. They are not "trying" to do anything. They are doing what they are dsoing, in all the aspects of this many sided cd, from rought delta-blues to minor-dominated jazz, from laid back ballads to up-tempo drivers. Pure music!
Fantastic live and on CD
author: Eden ThomasTerrific performers and the sounds they produce are just great. Buy this CD for yourselves and all your friends.

author: Abel H.This reminds me of days gone by the times of life when it was slower and things were enjoyed for the giving of ones self.

Live shows wonderful and band is friendly. Got to see again-repertoire growing. Can't wait for new CD. This one is playing all the time by me, wife and kids.
Absolutely awesome, great variety, great beat, great voices, entertaining
author: PhyllisI play this CD over and over. I have introduced it to many of my friends who also think it is awesome. There is not one bad song and that doesn't happen often. The whole CD is so uplifting. The music has a good beat, the voices are unique, creative use of instruments, very nice mix of songs. I enjoy this refreshing group tremendously. With the talent and variety in this CD you just never tire of it.
awesome band
author: John MorgaliHave not heard this specific disk, but I met them as they were playing on the waterfront in Savanah, GA. I was there with my soon to be wife, and they played almost every song on the album. I bought a home made "burned" copy of their music from them right then and there. I have listened to it regularly since! Not only that, but these guys are very down to earth and absolutely wonderful! An great bunch of guys with an amazing sound!
Absolutely Great
This CD is delightful. After buying my copy, I ordered 3 to give as gifts for Christmas. Not a bad track on the disk. This is one you'll listen to over and over.
We need you west of the Mississippi!

We listen to this cd over and over and over and ... now we need a live tour, so we can turn friends on to your great live thing. Lovers of blues-americana-bluegrass great instrumentals and vocals, get yourselves a copy of Porcupine and fall in love with the WIYOS.
Best CD buy of the year
author: Liz & PhilI'm just waiting for this band to hit it big after being included on a hip indie film soundtrack! (or, Woody Allen should try them over one of his opening credit reels as a change from his usual jazz ditties) A true gem of wildly original songs that are never derivative but build upon their early 20th-century jazz, blues and country influences and predecessors to become something completely modern and new.
YAy!
author: BeFreePlease, COme Back to Montreal!!!!
A good change of pace. Just what I was looking for.
author: Jim SmithIt's seldom that I find a cd with more than 2 or 3 songs I really like. This one is full of them! Hope to catch you in Knoxville next time.
American music through and through...
author: BartThis CD has grown on me as time has passed. At first I just liked a few tunes, but each time the other songs start to blossom right before your eyes. Ragtime and folk music combined here with some experimentation in the vocal arena (Tom Waits would be proud of the bullhorn type vocals on a couple songs). Great CD and worth a purchase from this very busy band.
Best CD I've heard in a long time
author: Ed Lorenzoni & Cecilia FanfarilloFirst heard this in a coffeeshop in Wurtsboro,NY . NOT a dog in the pack..Fantastic Vocials,& musical accompaniment..The absolute best.Wish Porcupine had a few brothers & sisters out there. Original music is never a bore. Thanks so much, for the wonderful, joyful CD. Regards Ed & Celia
Great musicianship!!
author: Doc Malone from Code BlueWell recorded, fun music with excellent harp, guitar, bass, and percussion. These gentlemen know their chops, but the delivery of the actual songs takes precedence over the technique. A recording that musicians will listen to over and over again. Great music for the living room or the car.
Love at first sight!
author: Beth StewartI saw the Wiyos play at the Blues Festival in Kalamazoo and it was 'love at first sight'...Their music seemed familiar to me in some strange way...Love that harmonica!
Thanks the Wiyos
author: DavidI bought this very good CD after listening The Wiyos live in Central Park. These musicians are great and funny. Their music sounds like this old blues everyone like (even my mother like it). In the same time it's pretty subtile music, voices are really good, I mean everything is good so it is difficult to focus on only one aspect. it sounds good, people around me like it, the musicians are cool so don't hesitate buy that CD you'll have fun

Great fun, very lively
author: Rowdy ScarlettLike the case says, the music could have come right out of the 20's and 30's. It's very lively, for the most part. Well written and creative. Great sounds and voices. Give something different a try.
Pure entertainment. A tasty lively seamless mix of blues genres.
author: NancyThe songs on The WIYOS' Porcupine showcase the artists' lively facility with their original lyrics and the musical stylings of several blues genres. Farkas, Parrish, and DeJarnette are equally at ease with fresh arrangements of "vintage" songs, such as "Baby, You Gotta Change Your Mind" , Rising of the Moon", and "Blue Drag", and with the dazzling strains of their own material, as evidenced by "Under the Sun", "Strawberry Wine", "Next Door Blues", and "Two Apples". Each of these guys has great instrumental know-how and musicality. Their songwriting is intelligent, winning, sweet and low down. The music on this CD is contagious in the best sense, will have you moving your happy bones and singing along with several tracks.
