On the tracks:
Coupled with booming drums, uilleann pipes, and rock guitar, Ross calls the role of Highlander clans in his rousing Scottish anthem, "Raise the Clans!"
The CD collection also contains "Bell Rock Light," the No. 1 song on Coverunner Radio in Redondo Beach, Calif., during two consecutive rating periods (Aug/Sept 2003). Ross wrote "Bell Rock Light" while researching and writing his book, The Lure of Lighthouses.
Ross, an admirer of the strength, durability, and perseverance of women, reflects on those qualities in several "power songs" about women. One of the most popular, "White Rose," tells the true tale of Flora McDonald, the legendary Scottish heroine instrumental in the rescue of the famed Bonnie Prince Charlie, the rightful heir to the throne of Scotland. The sentimental Celtic harp sound anchors the tune's orchestration.
"The Seven Men of Glenmoriston" salutes the ragged band of rebel loyalists protecting the Prince Charles in the aftermath of the disastrous defeat by the British at Culloden Moor, dooming the Prince's bid to regain the Scottish crown. Uilleann pipes and rock guitar give a grand-finale finish to the fundamentally acoustic piece.
Ross, born to famous fine-arts painter and illustrator Alexander Ross, a native Scot born in Dunfermline, keenly feels the depths of his Celtic roots. "My Father's Eye" replicates that special feeling of connectedness with clan and kin.
