notes

If ever there were a blues/rock artist for the world, it is Canadian born and California based guitarist Wolf Mail. Mail, who began his world tour in his teens with Ted Nugent, continues today as he travels throughout North America, Europe, and currently Australia in support of his debut solo release "Solid Ground".

This is a very well named CD, as Mail's work is indeed consistently solid from start to finish in every category. His vocals also unique sounding, and the sum product of all of this is a sound that is both somewhat familiar and yet very much original. Mail, like the excellent Australian guitarist Mal Eastick, is a very polished player, and his work tends to demonstrate more of the "beauty" side of blues/rock guitar, as opposed the "beast" so prominent in more aggressive styles.

Mail's guitar work bears the unmistakable marks of the normal SRV/Hendrix/Clapton influences. However, I pay him the ultimate compliment by saying that, though he has obviously been influenced by the normal guitar gods, he bears a striking resemblance to none of them, as his sound is strictly Wolf Mail.

I was impressed with the production and songwriting of this release, vocals didn't do much for me, but the guitar playing is outstanding of anything I have heard in a long time, warm, punchy, cristal clear passionate playing... highly recommended!

Track #2 "Hello" has to be my favorite "love song" of all time , if you know what I mean....

  • About freaking time...
    author: Pete Wells

Its about freaking time somebody comes up with a record with good ol' fashion songwriting, soulfoul vocals, guitar hero likes but tasty and not overplaying guitar licks, not overproduced but right on the money sound. Wolf Mail did it...Cheers!

  • Future of contemporary Blues..
author: Peter Graham - Los Angeles Times

I'm a big fan of blues rock music with a collection of about 500 Cds. I've got everything from Robert Johnson to Jeff Beck. I found this release to have a refreshing songwritting style with a variety of songs, rooted in a uncanny passionate BLUES feel...The future of contemporary Blues music is looking better!

  • Good songwritting...makes a Great record
    author: Andy B.

Its refreshing to hear an artist that can bring back some original songwritting in the Blues rock genre, I can finally let go of my SRV, ZZ top and Jimi's records, well for a little while anyway...Great record!

An excellent CD front to back. I thoroughly enjoyed it, can't wait for the next release.

  • "Wolf Mail is way out in front and still traveling"
author: Linda Fisher - London, UK

This is grown-up rock with Mail wringing emotion out of every note and making each one count rather than just playing for effect. There is so much more subtlety here than is usually found at the rock end of the spectrum, expressive vocals too. Nine of the ten tracks are original, in every sense of the word, as is the treatment of the Ted Nugent track. If Blues rock is the starting point, where is the finishing post? Who knows? Mail is way out in front and still traveling.

  • ..Defining a new genre of music.."
    author: Blues Musig Switzerland

This Cd is a melange of music ranging from hints of SRV to his own unique style of rock, all rich with shades of blue embedded deep and tastefully within. In fact Wolf, with the help of some seasoned and grizzled veterans in the studio, may be on the verge of defining a new genre of music.."

  • A touch of class...
    author: Amy Goodman...Soho tribune, NY

Tasty, creative and crafted guitar playing, Wolf is a true innovator in the contemporary Blues style . His approach to the instrument is absolutely unique, vibrant and genuinely real. He has taken the best out of the best and made it his own, with a touch of class...

...the Roy Buchanan of our time, a new updated, powerful , creative and fatally seductive artist. Wolf could be the sum of all the great guitarists of the last century, with a little bit of influence from everybody but yet ingeniously unique. Mail's songwritting focuses on songs rather than guitar playing, a very rare and pleasant thing for a musician that knows his instrument so well. If you have not got to him yet, your journey in the Blues world is indeed incomplete.

I really like this release. Excellent musicianship, wide range of styles and killer guitar playing. The vocals are good and overall presentation is excellent. I like the range of styles, and the transition between styles even during songs. This CD is above average and definitely a keeper. I give it four out of five stars.
